Elevator in Pearl City Burns Monday

A Pearl City grain elevator owned by Fred C Meyers was totally destroyed by fire Monday evening. Loss is estimated at 26500 and partially insured. Firemen, aided by Lena department, found the blaze about p.m. and could not save the building. Cause is believed to be spontaneous combustion.

Sewing Center Opens in Savanna Council Room

A sewing center to run a four week project will be opened by Cannil County Emergency Relief commission in Savanna Friday August 2 in the city council room donated by the council. Women will sew from 1 to 3 p.m. five days a week making clothing for school children countywide. Mrs. Marrard Hattie is in charge.

Thomson Woman Dies From Oil Explosion Burns

Mrs. Hayes Frazier of Thomson died at Jane Jamib hospital after severe burns from a kerosene explosion in her kitchen on Tuesday. The blast set her clothing on fire and neighbors helped extinguish the flames. Funeral services will be held at the M. E. church in Thomson with burial in Upper York cemetery.

Morrison Ice Cooling Appliance baseball team edged the Farm Bureau Nine 6 to 5 Sunday afternoon at Morrison. Both teams started strong with three runs in the first inning, Farm Bureau adding two in the second before Morrison tied it in the fourth. A sixth inning tie broke when Morrison plated the go ahead run and held on. Shear allowed 12 hits for Morrison while Schaut yielded six for Farm Bureau. This marked their third meeting of the year, with Farm Bureau previously winning the first two games.

Car Over Bank Averts Serious Injury Near Mt Carroll

William Somerville of Sit Carroll escaped harm after his car was side swiped by a truck on Savanna road near Center Hill School. His vehicle plunged down a steep embankment, tore through guard rails, and required a long, difficult recovery with a wrecker from Mt Carroll. The truck driver fled the scene, leaving Somerville shaken but uninjured.

Bull Kills Union Grove Farmer in Early Sunday Morning

Dave C. Bush a well known Union Grove township farmer was gored to death by a bull early Sunday. His sons Edwin and a brother found him after the cattle returned to the barn and the bull charged the car as they drove away. A doctor pronounced him dead. a coroner's inquest was held Sunday evening.

Motorist Must Obey New Code Provisions Tighten Penalties

State highway police in Sterling district convened to learn the recently adopted traffic code. Section 22 hikes penalties for disobeying officers with fines up to 500 dollars and up to six months imprisonment on repeated offenses. Hand signals are mandated for stops and turns with mechanical devices required for vehicles where signals aren’t visible. Officers will inspect lights and brakes. cars must stop within 30 feet from 28 miles per hour.
