Corn Borer Danger Grips Northwest Illinois Farmers
The northwest area of Illinois reports the country’s highest corn borer population per area. Extension entomologist H. B. Petty cited counts from nationwide surveys and demonstrated clean plowing drastically reduces borers, with a 0 per 100 stalks count on a clean plot versus 6 per 100 on average tillage. Farmers at two field meetings discussed early planting risks, weather effects, and relay planting’s impact on borers.
