Carroll County township election returns show heavy voting under clear weather with key contests for road and library posts. Wysox led with high turnout and several precincts reported decisive results while other townships weighed bids for supervisors commissioners and library trustees amid a countywide vote on alcohol-related issues.
The county attorney general advises that township supervisors must publish a full relief list showing beneficiary names and merchant payments. Where multiple payments go to one merchant, those orders may be grouped by beneficiary with dates. Marriage license data shows Robert K. Walters of Polo and Ruth Wows of Lanark filed an application Saturday.
Northern Illinois counties reported war department quotas set for CMTC programs with April first deadlines. Carroll had quota three and seven applicants. Winnebago 28 applicants. Stephenson quota six and 14 applicants. Lee five applicants. Daviess four of 15. Whiteside one of six. Ogle three applicants with room for two more. Officials will continue drive to prevent last minute withdrawals.
Acting Governor John Stelle proclaims Illinois Fourth Conservation Week from April 9 to 15 urging schools, civic groups, and citizens to study conservation. Thomas J. Lynch notes ongoing public cooperation and the aim to promote awareness, tree planting, erosion control, and reforestation statewide.
Glen Grace a 22 year old coach at Swaledate Iowa was fatally injured in an auto crash near DeWitt Iowa while returning home after driving Miss Azaila Knight Milledgeville high school teacher to the village. Grace died at 1 30 a m after being taken to Jane Lamb hospital Clinton. He suffered a fractured skull as the accident is believed to have occurred when he lost control, swerved to the highway shoulder and sideswiped an east bound truck. Grace had left Milledgeville about midnight for Bennett Iowa.
Secretary El ver Eisseller reports 1148 Carroll county benefit checks totaling 185 404.62 under the 1938 agricultural conservation program with about 60 more checks to come. He says farm plans for participation in the 1939 program are near completion and 1600 plans have been filed, about 85 percent showing intent to participate.
County tax records show Car roll county taxpayers paid 55,465.96 of the 1938 bill totaling 655,050.99 with township breakdowns including Washington Woodland Freedom Cherry Grove Lima Rock Creek Saler Mt. Carroll Hallis Savannah Elkhorn Grove and other entries.
The Jo Carroll Electrical Cooperative elected nine directors at a Mt Carroll meeting. The group formed to bring rural electric service to Daviess and Carroll counties and will survey farmers to determine line locations. Directors include Miles Rogers, Helen Manning, and others from Milledgeville, Savannah, Chadwick, Hanover, Elizabeth, Scales Mound, and Apple River. An attorney will draft incorporation papers. Federal funds are available for line construction once plans are complete.
Isaac Williamson, a traveling salesman, was arrested in Savannah on a false pretense charge after posing as a Brooklyn man and attempting to sell dyed rabbit fur coats at inflated prices. He was bound over to county court, waived preliminary hearing, and fined costs after authorities found the garments were not genuine coats.
Fire department in Javenna added ladders and hoses to fleet. Two obsolete units were removed. new gear includes a R4-Foor extension ladder and an eight-foot combination ladder, both wood construction, enabling longer reach and quicker setup.
Slowed by under 1000 students from northern Minds schools many local contestants won places in Division I at the annual meet held in Mt. Morris. Curiosity over the murder trial of John Culling and Chivence Collins, negro youths charged with Lit. LaMastery’s killing, prompted a sheriff’s office record search. It reveals Joseph O’Neal, 27, was the only person executed in the county, convicted of murder and sentenced to death on April 18, 1873, the rest usually executed at the state prison chair.
Two Black individuals are held on charges related to a payroll hold up. The case involves a serious offense and is overseen by the commandant's office as authorities pursue further details.
In Carroll County, John Collins and Clarence Collins, both teens, sit in jail awaiting trial for the assault and killing of First Lieutenant Paul E LaMasters at the Camp office. Authorities grilled them as investigators say two other suspects forced them from a car and fled with payroll funds, though the brothers maintain their innocence pending a preliminary hearing.
County officials announced 210 corn loans totaling 99347.83 dollars on 174312 bushels from 1938 corn, stored in cribs. Most loans short. some not completed due to weather, weather and storage issues. Transactions must be submitted to the Commodity Credit Corporation for purchase by July 1. If August 1 prices exceed loan rates, farmers will repay banks. otherwise, collateral corn may be delivered to the CCC via county agricultural conservation office at Mt Carroll.
