State highway police officers were photographed in new felt round brim hats replacing the visored chauffeur caps. Superintendent Phil M. Brown said the headgear provides better protection for officers on special detail during snow and bad weather.
Carroll county drew broad representation as 22 new legionnaires were formally presented American Legion lapel buttons at a Savanna high school gym ceremony. County Commander James Thorp presided with Rev. H Foster Whitney chaplain. Charles L Reese chaired the committee. ceremony featured ritual team from Peoples Gas post and a roast beef luncheon at Hotel Radie.
Wheat farmers may use part of their acreage for green manure cover crop hay pasture or silage to avoid penalties or loss of price support by June 1 1954. Ed L Dauphin urges immediate county office visit to designate usable acreage. Acreage up to 15 acres avoids penalties. excess acreage affects price support.
Herb Sisler of Mt. Carroll earned a spot on the first team selected from northern Illinois small high schools by coaches. Second-team honorees include Dick Fransen Shan leading, Pat Kearnaghan Mt Carroll, and Jay Hoffman Forreston with several players receiving special mention.
Mr and Mrs John Shirk of Mill edgeville spend winter in Bradenton Florida and are expected to return home this week with their plans noting a Florida visit and upcoming home arrival.

Savanna-Danny Edward Ross infant son of Mr and Mrs Thomas E Ross East Savanna died after birth at Jane Lamb hospital Clinton Iowa He was born Saturday at 2 pm and died at 3 pm Graveside services were at Savanna cemetery with Rev A Stanley Beck officiating Surviving are the parents a brother David paternal grandparents L E Ross Mattoon Illinois and maternal grandparents George Peniston St Louis Missouri.
Mrs Martha E Schreiner 69 died Monday at her Mt Carroll home. Services were held Tuesday at Frank funeral home Mt Carroll with Rev John Main officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery. Born November 13 1884 at Mt Carroll she was the former Martha Cummins. Survived by daughter Mrs Lyle Blythe Davenport Ia and son Glen Schreiner Rock Island plus seven grandchildren.
Charles M. Perkins of Savanna a World War II veteran seeks the Republican nomination for sheriff of Carroll county in the April 13 primary. He asks GOP voters to write his name in, place a mark in the square and vote. Perkins formerly drove for Scenic Stage Lines and now works at White's Meat Market in Savanna. He is married with two children living on Vine Street.
Carroll County Illinois Division of the American Cancer Society met in Mt. Carroll at the public health office on March 24. Russell Sharp outlined April campaign plans while township chairmen received prepared packets. Education chairman R. B. Polhill noted films shown to date. Refreshments were served.
Illinois Civil Defense Director forwarded an Award of Merit certificate for Savanna Ordnance Depot Ground Observer Post presented March 20 1954 by Hal Shrake. The depot accepted the award via John L. Benincosa with ceremony at Headquarters Building in attendance of Sgt McCallan Keil and Col Burbank. James L. Jensen attended with Gen Woodward praising local civil defense efforts.
A series of three day seminars on railway car and motor vehicle outloading of ammunition and explosives will be held at the Ammunition Inspector's School Savanna Ordnance Depot. The first session runs April 18 1954 with follow ups April 20 22 April 27 29 May 4 6 and May 11 13.

Rock Creek Northern Lights won the February March membership and attendance contest. their chair Mrs Henry Forster crowned Queen for a Day. Fifty five new members welcomed. Movies Overcoming Worry and The Warning Shadow shown by Mrs Otto Switzer. Tailoring class models by several members. Cherry Grove safety hat revue. Program chaired by Mrs Lawrence Miller with song leader Mrs Paul Lineback and accompanist Mrs Judd Law. Television and radio takeoffs by seven units. Each unit presented unique acts followed by a pot luck lunch.
WHBF-TV Channel 4 Rock Island Illinois now operates at 100000 watt power the FCC maximum for channels 2 to 6. The upgrade required a new transmitter and gear costing over 150000 dollars. Robert J Sinnett chief engineer says early color installation depends on final FCC standards and equipment should be available soon making WHBF one of the first to air color programs.
A county clerk issued a marriage license last week to Richard L. Pettengill of Savanna and Gail Marie Irwin of Hanover. James Turnbaugh Jr. and Luther DeSpain Jr. of Mt. Carroll were jailed for debt in Savanna after disorderly conduct convictions.
The office of Northern Illinois State Teachers college announces the winter quarter 1954 honor roll. Local names include Arliss Andresen and Lyle Tripp of Chadwick, Marie L. Iben of Chadwick, Elizabeth Van Huizen of Fulton, Carol Barthel of Milledgeville, Jeanette M. Tripp of Savannah, and Darrell L. Gaar of Thomson.
Carroll county issued corn allotment notices on March 18 to tenants and landlords showing a 24 percent reduction from the 1951 1952 and 1953 average. Producers must plant within their allotment to be eligible for a 1954 loan or purchase agreement. Appeals must be in writing to the county committee by April 2. Those who did not receive notices should contact the county office.
The Central District Brethren spring camp will meet at Lanark’s First Brethren Church from April 2 to 4 with 6 30 p m registration. Clinton Symphony Orchestra will give its first concert Sunday April 4 at 3 p m in the Washington Junior High School auditorium. Conductor Lowell Adams leads the 65 piece ensemble with guest soloist William Henigba um guest soloist.

The program features Mt Carroll grade school band music an address by W Stewart Williams IEA assistant director of professional and public relations a discussion on the Future Teachers Association or a school topics movie followed by a business session and refreshments. All active teachers and any certificate holders are invited.
An unexpected snowstorm swept in early Monday morning, leaving four to five inches on the ground and over seven inches by late morning. Highways were hazardous through Tuesday noon, but no major accidents were reported while snow was plowed. Mr and Mrs John Newton of Polo visited Mr and Mrs Jack Newton for dinner Sunday.
More than 100 members and candidates for office attend a one o clock luncheon at Hope EUB church Chadwick. The meeting featured remarks by Leo Allen Robert Canfield Eugene Clift and other candidates along with reports by county party officers and small talks by 12 nominees for nomination on the Republican ticket.
Lanark student Quentin Brown won the Wong Grain Judging Contest held Wednesday evening at Mill Edgeville with 881 of 930 points. Milledgeville’s David Stewart placed second with 855, followed by Merlyn Bruns and Roger Bremer of Lanark in third and fourth. Participants from Lanark Thomson Chadwick and Milledgeville judged corn wheat soybeans timothy oats alfalfa corn silage and grass silage plus weed and crop seeds. Mt Carroll and Shannon were not represented.
In a 2 pm Sunday ceremony at First Methodist Church Savanna officiated by Rev A Stanley Beck Gail Marie Irwin married Richard Pettingill of Savanna son of Robert Pettingill Clinton Ia. Maid of honor Kay Curtis Hanover. Best man Burton Bogue Savanna. Bride wore pale blue suit with white carnations bouquet attendant wore two tone blue dress. Gail a native of Hanover attended local schools. Richard a Savanna High School graduate works at A and P Savanna. They reside in Megan apartment Chestnut Park.
A representative of the district social security office will be at the Savanna post office at 12 30 p m on Wednesday April 28 Wednesday May 26 and Wednesday June 23 to assist anyone seeking information on social security problems.
Guests gathered Friday evening at Mr. and Mrs. Ed Aude to celebrate Mr. Aude's birthday. Attendees included Herman Aude Sr and family, John Aude, Carroll, Herman Aude Jr and family, Eugene Weber and Terry, Louis Weber, Judy and Michael, Carrie Hartman, Shirley Provant, and Charles Aude. Cards provided entertainment and refreshments followed. Mrs Sepha Stein of Clinton Indiana spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Handé.
Dan Nelson and daughter Dorohhy returned Thursday from a week in Macon Mississippi. They stayed with Harry Beatty in Normal before heading home. Daffodils and iris from Mississippi were displayed at the Baptist church in Mt Carroll on Sunday. Mrs Bessie Schreiner of Clinton Indiana visited the Schreiner home. Mrs Minnie Linker of Lanark joined Charlies Linker Richard Adolphs and family for Sunday meals.
Mount Carroll high jumper Floyd Smith won first place with a six feet four inches leap. Sterling’s Sam Milan tied for second in the same event, matching the strong statewide talent.
Plum River Valley Youth for Christ will present Frederick H. Lindblad of the Christian Home League at a special rally Friday April 2 at 8 p m in the Mt Carroll Church of God. Lindblad is a Swedish tenor soloist and accomplished organist and pianist.
