Powell to represent Thomas County in state Farm Bureau queen contest
Miss Nevelle Powell of Coolidge will represent Thomas County in the state Farm Bureau queen contest to be held in Macon November 11 to 13. Miss Jerre Ann Herring of Ochlocknee will be the county talent show entrant, chosen at Meigs High School with J. Griffin as host. Powell, 17, of Coolidge High School, placed second in Miss Deep South and in Miss RHA, and sang Tammy in talent. Herring was runner up, with Cynthia Cooper of Meigs placing third.

Miss Jerreann Herring 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Herring Jr. of Ochlochnee, won the school talent contest with a piano medley. She is a junior at Ochlochnee High School, member of Beta Club, FT A and FHA, secretary of the junior class, and organist at Ochlochnee First Methodist Church. Her hobbies include swimming and dancing.

Woman Completes Appalachian Hike Milestone in Maine
Dorothy Laker of Tampa Florida completed a 2026 mile trek along the Appalachian Trail finishing near Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park Maine. She became the second woman on record from Oglethorpe Georgia to reach Maine and followed 69 year old Emma Gatewood who did the feat earlier that month. Laker started with Gatewood in April and carried a heavy pack while shedding pounds along the journey.

The first Junior Garden Club of Cairo was organized at Mrs. Elmer Bell’s home. Sponsored by Lilium Garden Club with Mrs. BE. C. Alligood assisting, the Daisy club elected Beverly Bell president and George Kennedy vice president. Members planned monthly meetings and plant purchases for the Bell premises clubhouse.

Pavo Baptist WMS installs officers at evening ceremony
Pavo Baptist Church Woman's Missionary Society installed officers for the coming year during a Tuesday night service led by Mrs. Anna Schinkel. Officers include President Mrs. W. D. Dorming, Vice President Mrs. H. C. Mims, Secretary Mrs. 98. H. Herndon, Treasurer Mrs. Blake Threatt, and several chairs and youth directors. A reception, Kids Day movies, a buffet dinner and a chorus event followed, with a closing solo and prayer.
