Preston Grover notes in the congressional record that Senator Black anticipated an anti-Klan kickback and moved to forestall it. The Senate had confirmed Black to the Supreme Court when Senator Bankhead of Alabama delivered a speech amid the session’s closing rush.
Thomasville Bulldogs face a rebuilding season with only four returning starters. Coach Harper and Garner assemble a largely new lineup around Tucker Briley and Hill while predicting tough games against Pelham Camilla Waycross Tifton Bainbridge Cordele Sylvester Valdosta Moultrie Albany. Schedule lists nine home and away dates with the team aiming to overachieve despite earlier underdog status.
In the Senate debate on confirmation, Bankhead read 35 messages to Justice Hugo Black from Jews Catholics Negroes and foreign-born residents praising his qualifications. The letters included notes by Black and references to his ties to Birmingham figures like Louis Pizitz and Julian Saks. Bankhead noted Black prepared the messages and said one correspondent asserted Hugo Black never showed Klan prejudice.
The Thomasville High School band ordered new uniforms in red and black trimmed with braid. They will be worn for home football games and some away events. The band, drilled in parade and letter formation under Mr W T Verran, impressed with recent performances. The school paper plans its first appearance around October 30 and seeks staff from the English Department. Miss Maryland Wilson of Greenville SC will advise the paper.
A new rotating schedule is used this year at the school, with only two rotating periods and two static periods. The first two rotate, while third and fourth stay fixed, each activity block lasting about thirty minutes. Proponents say it eliminates repeated daily classes, reduces fatigue, and allows high achievers to leave early for study hall at the end of a rotating cycle.
Two new departments shop and vocational agriculture join the high school curriculum this year. Mr J Knapp Boddiford leads the shop program and Mr W G Johnston oversees vocational agriculture, both met with warm reception from students and faculty.
New faculty fills junior and senior high schools with hires from Georgia and South Carolina. Principal N M Huckabee comes from Camden South Carolina. Librarian Rachel Mays from Mercer University joins piano instruction.
Enrollment this year reaches 656 students with 335 in senior high and 21 in junior high. The rise is about 100 more students than last year, while the cafeteria expands with new dish and glass washing machine and a steam table to boost service and sanitation. A number of new students have enrolled in Thomasville High Schools from other districts.
A long list of new junior high students names from Georgia Florida Alabama and Tennessee accompanies the report. Among them are Westley Chappell from Quitman Georgia Juankaard from Moultrie Georgia Madre Owenly from Entie lorah Harriet Horne Metcalfe Juliet Smith Metcamife Georgia Elmer Horne Metcalfe Henrietta Wilson Monticello and Wilhelmina Dollar Atlanta.
