Governor Hay supervises relief as fire rips through Hot Springs Eastern section destroying 55 blocks with an estimated 6 million dollars in losses. Two thousand five hundred homeless camp at state fairgrounds as state militia arrives and city braces for further assistance.
A fire starting in a negro dwelling near government reservation in Hot Springs Arkansas spread through the city last night. By midnight more than thirty blocks were gone and control eluded both Hot Springs and Little Rock firefighters. Water supply was cut off and dynamite used in a failed attempt to halt the blaze.
The Odd Fellows Second Division of Georgia will meet September 10 and 11 with Samaritani Lodge No. 360 of Coolidge. District Deputy B. M. Zangwill leads plans to host lodges from Baker to Worth counties, with about sixteen hundred members across forty lodges. The program includes church services, addresses on Odd Fellowship, officer appointments, and a Third Degree exemplification at the Odd Fellows Hall.
The Thomasville club presented Manager Dudley with a thousand dollar bill after a reception at the Elks Club. President Jamison announced Dudley’s engagement to Miss Mary Bondurant of Valdosta, planned for October tenth. Dudley thanked the supporters and praised the fans and his team.
Special to Times Enterprise Cairo Sept 5 The case State v Linton Singletary charged with murder of Hardy Rawls concluded with a jury verdict guilty with a recommendation for mercy. Judge Park sentenced Singletary to life imprisonment as defense moves for a new trial.
Washington Sept 5 Manuel de Seamaconae Inclan former Mexican minister to the United States and ex financial head in London arrived in Washington. He seeks Mexican loan under U S support tied to Huerta's removal and a constitutional election to end hostilities. Officials hopeful but not guaranteed.
The Census Bureau reports 794,006 bales ginned to Sept 1 1913 in the first ginners' report, with round bales and island bales included. Gains occur in Alabama Georgia Louisiana Mississippi North Carolina Oklahoma South Carolina and Tennessee while Texas and North Carolina show declines. The season's record reflects early maturation and boll weevil pressure.
Atlanta report says Wallingford Oliver, once a famed Get-Rich-Quick artist, may finish his Georgia convict camp term next week and be transferred to Mississippi penitentiary. Requisition hearings occur before Governor Slaton as Oliver challenges being the wrong man, claiming a twin brother is the true convict.
Diamonds valued at three thousand dollars were found on Will and Bertha Ward of Boston. Lizzie Brinkley allegedly stole a bag containing the stones from the Ward woman. J a Ramsey the jeweler confirmed the stones as real. The pair claimed to have found them in woods near Macon and were jailed on suspicion as notices were sent to several cities.
In Cairo and Thomasville reports, LeConte faces possible trial in another county as Judge Park weighs options. Witnesses cite public safety concerns and law and order while McNaughton case filings and prison commission reviews proceed alongside local docket.
Cairo Sept 5 Special. Prominent citizens summoned to testify whether Ed LeCont, accused of murdering the Badiford family, could receive a fair trial in Grady County. Report says open court will hear beliefs. many say LeCont deserves a fair trial and no lynching mob is planned or discussed locally.
