President Wilson issued a Labor Day message urging production and restraint to curb living costs. He welcomed organized labor leaders’ reception of his wage plan and said he would convene conferences of labor representatives soon to address capital labor relations and wage issues after his West tour.
Washington report says Germany’s cotton industry suffers from scarce raw materials. Prewar Germany imported about two million bales annually, but loss of Alsace Lorraine reduced supply to one million five hundred thousand bales.
Adam Schaeffer, an independent operator said to be American or British, was killed by Mexican bandits at his mine in Zacatecas on August 28, according to a telegram received by the American Smelting and Refining Company in El Paso.
The St Johns Missionary Negro Baptist Association executive board adopted resolutions denouncing northern interference in southern race relations. Publicly announced at a meeting in Austin attended by about two thousand Black attendees and more than one hundred whites, the resolutions urged self adjustment for mutual good.
About fifty community leaders gathered at the Y M C A to organize the Memorial Hospital fundraising drive. Judge H W Hopkins C W Cooper and doctors Little Schreiber Holton spoke inspiringly as the group agreed to start the drive on September 19. The meeting featured sandwiches and ice, described as the largest and most successful of its kind in town.

Engineer R L Dekle escaped a wreck Sunday night when his Monticello bound engine overturned near Metcalfe after a log cart moved sand onto the rails. The fireman Will Green leaped free but suffered minor injuries. Dekle and passengers were unhurt. The wreckage was cleared. the train did not reach Monticello and was returned Monday morning.
The Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce seeks a meeting with Thomasville officials to discuss rerouting the Dixie Highway via Sunny Hill and removing the Grady county section. The Thomasville Commercial Association will join, with the conference held in Thomasville led by local committee chair CL Mt Aa Jey and others.
Martial law kept peace after weekend riots tied to the lynching attempt of Maurice Mayes. Casualties rose to four Sunday and two dead from Saturday’s unrest. National guardsmen and police patrolled the city with machine guns, searching negroes and seizing weapons as bands dispersed.
Mrs J M Blackshear killed a rattlesnake in the Beachton district described as the largest seen in years. It had eighteen rattles and a button, measured well over seven feet, and was too heavy to lift. She beat it with a stick then pummeled the head with a hammer in a near heroic effort.

Secretary Daniels and officials observed a historic naval review not seen since May 1908, with ships dressed for the event and a vivid public pageant.
In Washington on September 1 Republican Senators abandoned a planned organized tour to accompany President Wilson’s trans continental journey. Individual senators will arrange speaking engagements in territories through which the president will travel. Clyde Stanaland, with the Navy eighteen months, secured his discharge in New York this week and arrived home today.
Nashville police chief Barthell said Robin J. Cooper was killed by two or more men and arrests will come soon. The department ruled out blackmail and found no woman involved. Mrs. Cooper, visiting Evanston, Illinois, had arrived with her father Milton H. Smith, president of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. Cooper's funeral is set for today.
Rome reports the king granted amnesty today to forty thousand Italians sentenced to long prison terms during the war. The move frees a large number of offenders and marks a significant clemency act in the postwar period.
Budapest reports that Prime Minister Pretlerz Epederich has offered to resign and leave his cabinet dissolved. The cabinet may be replaced by Franz Heinrich, the current minister of commerce, as the new premier and cabinet are being formed.
