Lancaster Mass November 24 Richard K Powers claims kinship to the original Mary Sawyer the heroine of the nursery rhyme about the lamb Powers says Mary Sawyer was his cousin and marks a centenarian birthday anniversary in town.
President Wilson reiterated that Huerta’s government is slowly crumbling and warned against false impressions from Mexican press reports. He said there was no foundation for near U S recognition rumors and noted upcoming message to Congress. He praised European governments for friendly cooperation with the United States.
In Atlanta on November 24 a street car riot led to twenty pistol shots fired without wounding anyone. Police suspect drunken or crazy behavior amid the clash between black and white riders. Four black and several white men were arrested as motorcycle patrols arrived.
In Manila on November 22 the Philippine Commission enacted the anti slavery law which had earlier been adopted by the Philippine National Assembly on November 13. The measure required minor amendments to correct the legislation.
Peter Edwards of Pittsburg was sentenced to 30 days in the public workhouse after his wife alleged he beat her about once a week since their marriage, estimating around two thousand eighty blows in total.
James K. McGuire former Democratic Mayor of Syracuse indicted by a grand jury for soliciting corporate campaign contributions. Conviction penalties include one year in prison and a $1,000 fine or both at the court's discretion.
District Attorney Whitman presented grand jury testimony accusing James K. McGuire, former Syracuse mayor, of diverting corporate funds to a campaign. Filmore Condit testified that McGuire offered state business for campaign contributions plus a commission on sales as alleged.
Saturday afternoon at the carnival grounds officers Poole Castleberry and Natworth pursued Will Renfroe, a short Black man living near town, wanted for a city limit public safety incident two weeks earlier. He fled across grounds toward the A B and A railroad line and was stopped before Hanse Street crossing and jailed.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered the Atlantic Coast Line and its railroads to set equal rates for Pelham Camilla and Sylvester with Albany Tifton and Thomasville. The case argued discrimination in water and rail class rates and all rail rates from eastern cities versus basing points. Thomasville firm Snodgrass and MacIntyre, active in past cases, handled the matters.
Oxford, Nov. 22. Chancellor David Lloyd George argued that women cannot obtain the ballot through a Parliamentarian act. He told deputations that there is no majority of public opinion or Parliament backing suffrage and that Militant tactics have harmed their cause.
The corn contest at the Thomas County Fair crowned George and Cal Cochran first with 89.57 bushels earning 25.00. Ralph Newton placed second with 85.28 bushels for 15.00. Lonnie Sherrod was disqualified for improper measurement. J L Heald won 15.00 for best half acre of peanuts with 53.05 bushels.
Secretary of the Navy Daniels ordered seven hundred fifty marines from Philadelphia to Pensacola Florida. They will depart later this week. The move follows a favorable report from Assistant Secretary Roosevelt and aims to concentrate marines at principal southern stations.
Dr T R Crovatt was seriously injured when he fell from an open car on Broad Street near Hansell while en route to his home with Mr C Groover and two friends Archer and Evans. A base of the skull fracture was reported with uncertain recovery prospects but later updates indicated possible improvement despite gravity of injuries. The incident drew concern from the community as physicians evaluated the extent of damage and anticipated recovery timelines.
Major General Leonard Wood Chief of Staff United States Army was shaken but uninjured after tumbling from his horse at the St Myer parade ground. He fell unconscious briefly but recovered quickly. His young daughter was present during the incident.
Pittsburg police report a three week stretch on Grant Boulevard with more than 100 sticks of dynamite scattered along the road. Herman Leidman, a noted police figure, was arrested after explosives were uncovered and authorities hope he can explain who laid the dynamite.
R J Chester of Mobile Alabama claims agent for Mobile and Ohio Railroad was ordered to appear in Chicago to explain to Federal Judge Kennesaw M Landis how he induced widow Mary Panek to settle her claim for seven hundred fifty dollars after her son Edward Panek died in a troop train wreck near Buckatunna Mississippi on October sixteenth. The widow had sued for ten thousand dollars.
Mobile counsel announces settlement of the Panek damage suit in Mobile Alabama after a conference of attorneys. Mrs Panek attended the session.
Postmaster General Burleson announced that the parcels post limit will rise from twenty to fifty pounds for all distances. The change requires a commission review and approval, but action is expected soon. The rate structure remains unchanged.
Dr J C Schwencke of this city was elected President of the Georgia State Veterinary Association at its seventh annual session in Athens. The election followed speeches by Southern veterinary leaders and is welcomed by local friends who praise his fitness for the role. The new officers include J C Schwencke of Thomasville as President and Peter J Babnson as Secretary with other officers named.
The Broad Street Theatre is closed for several days for a major remodel led by Mr. Max Dobbs. The façade is being redesigned to modern standards with tiled entry, paneled woodwork, marble finish, and an inside balcony access. Dobbs hopes to reopen soon.
Telamon Cuyler, a young lawyer long resident of New York, sues his mother in law Mrs Isabella Barton for a half million dollars alleging she alienated his wife’s affections. The defendants now reside in California. The wife was divorced from Cuyler in California courts.
Facsimiles of printed instructions attributed to Huerta for Mexican elections arrive in New York. They show tactics to secure power with blank ballots and a plan to force results to favor Huerta for President and Blanquet as Vice President.
Daniel Willard of the Baltimore and Ohio led a group urging the Interstate Commerce Commission to allow higher freight rates amid rising costs. Wabash President Frederick A. Deaney and Pennsylvanian system solicitor George Patterson supported increases, while Brandeis and Lyon represented the Commission.
Mr. J. W. Bloodsworth won second prize at the Fair for garden trench. He owned three quarters of an acre within the city and this year produced two crops earning $171.65, not counting gifts to friends. The note suggests money can be made from a small plot with effort.
Yonkosama Japan November 24 The steamship Minnesota on voyage from Manila to Seattle ran aground yesterday in the Straits of Shimonoseki. All passengers are safe and the vessel appears undamaged. authorities believe it can be floated soon.
Waycross Georgia November 24 T A Emerson president of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company is hospitalized with a severe attack of acute indigestion. He was brought from DuPont Georgia this morning where he was stricken. Attending physicians consider his condition grave.
Washington November 24 Agents of the Department of Justice began a rigid investigation into alleged cold storage combinations. Attorney General McReynolds says these groups may be responsible for high egg prices and other similar goods.
