County and city officials submitted several New Deal style road projects to the state and federal authorities. Proposals include street paving drainage and general street cleaning plus tree pruning and shoulder improvements on county roads.
Lieut. Com. Settle's calibration balloon ascended 61 237 feet as the NA A announced a potential new world height. Soviet claims of over 62 000 feet lack official proof, with the Belgian Auguste Piccard's 53 153 foot record cited as official.
Washington reports rapid final form of winter relief plans for about 1.6 million families on relief. The surplus relief corporation and the federal emergency relief administration coordinate with the agricultural adjustment administration to buy farmers surpluses and distribute food. The civil works administration aims to put 4 million men to work by December 16. Hopkins leads the joint relief effort as funds exceed one million dollars allocated in two weeks for clothing and bedding. The surplus relief corporation opened bids for 5 million pounds of supplies.
Chicago November 23 Earle Wynekoop 27 was held for questioning after Chief of Detectives William Shoemaker named a household member as possible killer in the death of Rheta Wynekoop. He walked to his home rear door then was escorted to Fillmore Street station with no hat overcoat or suitcase.
A stubborn forest fire near Tujunga in the Foothill region north of Los Angeles destroyed up to 150 cabins and homes, damaged the watershed, and trapped nearly 100 relief workers. By morning the wind eased and the blaze veered away, leaving the town largely evacuated and under a safety watch.

One hundred seventy welfare workers on unemployment relief projects were found safe after fleeing a massive foothill fire northwest of Los Angeles. The blaze roared through Tujunga, destroying homes of wealthy residents and forcing evacuations and shelter in public buildings. Firefighters, many volunteers, battled the red-tide blaze as scenes of hysteria and evacuations unfolded.
