By DeWitt Mackenzie Associated Press War Editor the Allied push to the Rhine continues with heavy strength and advancing weaponry while weather and mud threaten campaigns. German resistance stiffens at Aachen and Metz Belfort as Von Rundstedt clings to western defenses west of the Rhine.
Georgia clears after noon with warmer conditions in the north this afternoon. Tonight will be partly cloudy and cool, followed by fair and mild Tuesday. Northwest Florida remains cloudy this afternoon and tonight, Tuesday partly cloudy and cool.
Atlanta will host the North Georgia Methodist Conference as it opens with topics including reducing districts to nine, crusade for Christ promotion, and a superintendent plan. Principal speakers include Bishop Arthur Moore and Dr. Ralph E. Diffendorfer. nine men to be admitted, with withdrawals retirements and 10 special appointments announced.
Theodore Hornaday, 38, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the shotgun slaying of John C. Vaughn, a clothing store clerk, at a Dexter Avenue store in Montgomery. Under a plea agreement he abandoned insanity defenses and admitted the crime, saying Vaughn had been talking about him.

Russian and American-made tanks push the Soviet line around Budapest toward Austria and Czechoslovakia. Forces advance on Lucenec, a key Nazi communications hub on the Slovak border, with Gyongyos seized and the Budapest Miskolc railway under heavy fire. Reports say Hatvan and nearby trunk lines are outflanked as tanks fan out from Gyongyos in hard street fighting.
Swiss radio reported Allied soldiers constructing a bridge across the Rhine southeast of Mulhouse. The broadcast said fighting on the southern end of the Western front reached the Swiss border and a German wounded man was taken to Basel by a Swiss ambulance.
Upwards of 850 American planes bombed and strafed the Ruhr valley as four Allied armies advanced. An oil plant at Gelsenkirchen and rail yards at Munster were targeted with a mix of heavy bombers and fighter aircraft. The 15th Air Force raided southern Germany, while the Eighth was grounded.
The Supreme Court split 5 to 4 to bar county court judge Michael F. McDonald of Luzerne County from deducting $13,107 in campaign expenses on his federal income tax return. The court said matters of campaign expense deductions fall under Congress's judgment and tax policy. Justice Frankfurter authored the majority opinion with a Black dissent joined by Douglas and Murphy.
Washington lawmakers pressed to alter or drop the Little Steel wage formula after a White House cost of living report showed a 29 to 30 percent rise since January 1, 1941. Senator Pepper urged revising the rule, while Aiken and Tunnell signaled doubt about discarding it entirely.
Gov Ellis Arnall proclaimed November 23 and 30 as Thanksgiving days in Georgia.
