The Greater Cairo Promotional Association launches an elaborate Christmas Festival replacing the Grady County Fair. Local merchants, citizens, and high school clubs contributed time and funds to the project amid community enthusiasm.
Dr. James Clanton of Thomasville was elected to the executive committee of the South Atlantic Red Cross Blood Region joining seven other members. He chairs the Thomas County Blood Programs and the region will plan and assist in blood program operations. Special recognition went to Pulaski County for high collections through Oct 31.
Rosedale Missionary Baptist Church in Boston will hold Men and Women's Day with an 11 a.m. sermon by Pastor Rev. Benjamin Cooney Jr. and a 3 p.m. address by Mrs. Thelma Codey of Thomasville. Services are open to the public.
James Glisson of Eustis, a Republican and former Thomas County man, won the Florida State Senate 11th District seat, defeating incumbent Sen. Welborne Daniel by about 14 000 votes across seven counties. The district includes Sumter St James and parts of Volusia Putnam Clay and Duval. Glisson, 33, previously served four years in the House and is a chiropractor. He is married with a son Randy aged 11.
Gov. Jimmy Carter urges a state funded plan to set a minimum level of health services across Georgia. He seeks 17.5 million dollars for uniform physical and mental health services, with 21 million more requested later to initiate the program and ensure access in rural counties.
The Coast Guard cutter Jarvis with 170 crew members rode out flooding in its engine room and was towed by Japanese trawler Koyo Maru No 3 to Sedanka Island in an Aleutian inlet. Divers from Navy and Coast Guard would assess hull and shaft damage before repairs.
In Buenos Aires six petty officers at the navy training school mutinied early today as Juan Peron flew home from exile. The four hour mutiny ended with the men surrendering at 4 25 a.m. Peronist supporters urged a massive welcome at the airport despite a government ban and a military lockout.
A preliminary report from the Georgia Transportation Department says a Chattanooga Tennessee to Florida toll road is feasible. Hensley Schmidt of Marietta will deliver the draft for further study while routes north of Columbus follow I 75 I 24 toward Rome Cedartown Rockmart Carrollton and La Grange.
Magnolia School PTO sponsors a fish fry this Saturday from 4 30 to 8 p m at the school cafeteria. Tickets are 1 25 per plate with proceeds benefiting PTO projects for the school.
