President Franklin D Roosevelt and Soviet Commissar Maxim Litvinoff met at the White House as a formal recognition of Soviet relations after 16 years of estrangement seemed imminent. They spoke after a brief earlier meeting, signaling a potential shift in abnormal relations.
Maxim Litvinoff emerged from the White House after a Roosevelt conference and said he expected a statement today on U S Soviet recognition after 16 years of strained relations. He noted any announcement would come from President Roosevelt before he leaves for Warm Springs. Litvinoff said he would stay in Washington for now to handle business and did not plan to travel to Warm Springs immediately.

He plans to spend Thanksgiving with children patients at the Warm Springs Foundation.

Washington Nov 17 Senator Pittman a long time silver remonetization advocate predicts President Roosevelt will take the initiative to restore silver coinage. He said Roosevelt is considering plans including reopening U S mints to coinage of domestically produced silver.
Dr. T. D. Ellis, secretary of the extension board of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, says the church spends 7 million dollars annually outside the budget leading to unpaid pastors and unmet budget items. He cites benevolent misuses and urges applying the funds to the official budget.
Washington reports the administration kept the price at $33.56 an ounce for a fourth day. The level trails world prices, and officials avoid confirming new moves on gold exports or dollar support amid ongoing market speculation.
London reports the American dollar moved erratically today amid rumors from the United States. It opened at 5.28 to the pound, fell to 5.40, then recovered to 5.34 3-4.

The Public Works Administration allotted 2 001 400 dollars for 25 non-federal projects in 14 states. The program aims to provide 13 137 man months of direct employment. Ten projects receive grants for 30 percent of labor and material. the rest locally fund construction. Fifteen projects get 80 percent grants. remaining costs are loans repayable with 4 percent interest.
San Jose authorities traced a late night phone call to a downtown garage where Thomas Thurmond was arrested after a deputy overheard the line being tapped. Holmes and Thurmond confessed to abducting Brooke L Hart and tossing him into San Francisco Bay.
Marion H. Liles, resident vice president of the Trust Company of Georgia, was elected president of the First National Bank of Macon to succeed Marshall K. Hunter. The announcement comes from Macon Georgia dated November 17.
The steel industry asked the NRA for an extension of its 11S code to May 31 1904, stating satisfaction with the code’s effects. Hugh S. Johnson presented the resolution after forwarding it to President Roosevelt, noting the extension is for further trial to demonstrate the code’s aims under NRA law.

New York November 17 UPS reports Sears Roebuck and Co. sales for seven days ending November 13 rose 40 percent from the previous year. The Southern territory led gains with the Midwest close behind.
The Boston American reports threats against the infant granddaughter of Governor Joseph B. Ely and the children of former Governor Frank G. Allen and Daniel Needham. Needham denied the story, but state police uncovered the threats. Needham is dead.
