General MacArthur reports 35 000 Japanese troops join the Leyte fight as American planes and PT boats harass them. Ormoc remains key with fierce fighting and flames as US forces push through foothills and gain ground on a wide front.
In Macon Georgia Dr Samuel T Senter and Rev J C G Brooks were named district superintendents with about 60 pastorate changes announced at the South Georgia Methodist Conference. Several moves affected Vineville Trinity Waycross Columbus and other churches as clergy reassigned and new pastors set. Seventeen members were designated for armed forces chaplaincy as Bishop Arthur Moore presided.
President Roosevelt arrived amid roaring welcomes and confirmed plans for an early meeting of the big three with Churchill and Stalin. He noted his surprise at winning a larger Fourth Term margin, forecasting 335 electoral votes versus Dewey, while the count stood at 432 to 99.
Washington reports the 1944 election gave Roosevelt a working majority in both houses and 25 of 48 governorships. Prime Minister Churchill told the House that German V-2 and V-1 weapons have been striking England and targets in Paris and Antwerp with high speed and long range. He noted the rockets, though hyped by German propaganda, have caused limited damage and that dockyards at Antwerp remain crucial to Eisenhower’s offensive.
United States Third Army offensive pushes toward Metz France as Patton orders armored support and captures Chateau-Salins along with several towns. The push covers a 55 mile arc around the fortress city and aims for the Saar border while Fourth Armored and Seventh Army units extend gains north of Metz.
Tomorrow in Thomasville the American Legion marks Armistice Day with a parade and a public address by Hon. Scott Candler at the municipal auditorium. Finney General Hospital assists the program with support, Colonel Browne leads the parade, and a Legion Breakfast at nine o’clock features sausage, grits, biscuits and coffee served by Legion helpers.
Col James H Mills of Ft Meade Fla a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient will take part in the Thomasville Armistice Day parade alongside 23 other overseas veterans from Finney General Hospital The Italian campaign hero earned the award for conspicuous gallantry at Cisterna di Littoria last May where he silenced two Nazi nests single handed killed four Germans with five shots and captured seven more He then drew fire to allow his unit to seize an enemy strong point and take 22 prisoners with no casualties
