Atlanta reports an increase of about 10,000 workers on Georgia WPA and related projects for the week ended Nov. 2. Total workers reach 31,351, up from 21,833 on Oct. 26, with district tallies for Athens, Albany and others.
Federal District Judge William C. Coleman ruled the Public Utility Holding Company Act of 1935 unconstitutional. He ordered the American States Public Service Company trustees to treat the act as invalid and not in effect. The decision addressed claims of collusion among attorneys and confirmed the matter was properly raised in hearings.
Washington announces five more states designated as modified accredited areas practically free from bovine tuberculosis. Massachusetts South Carolina Georgia Alabama and Louisiana join the list, bringing total to 31.
The Georgia PWA announced approval of plans for eight additional projects, raising total acted upon under the new program to 94. Included is Quitman hospital with an estimated cost of 45 000 and bids to be opened November 29 in Quitman city hall.
Gainesville Ga November 7 Three acquitted and five others given suspended sentences in a case arising from an attack on John Snead a time service expert at the labor troubled Chicopee cotton mill. The eight men former employee of the mill were charged with beating Snead. Jeff Fowler Dean Smith Mood Allison Thurs ton Simpson and Paul Morris were fined 100 and given one year in jail. The sentences were suspended after an agreed verdict. Three others Henry Delong Max Hubbard and John Ogle were acquitted.
Washington November 7 treasury figures show receipts for November at 38 266 561 46 expenditures 10 459 980 87 leaving a balance of 1 188 452 275 38 customs receipts for the month 5 272 701 85. Fiscal year totals since July 1 receipts 1 305 469 013 30 expenditures 2 733 464 089 07 with 1 214 326 696 67 emergency spending and gross debt 29 469 742 025 94 up 25 619 302 00 from yesterday. Gold assets stand at 9 704 654 204 16.
Palestine Texas Nov. 7 Col George A Wright 90 year old Confederate veteran who once served 40 minutes as president of the United States died last night Crowds gathered at every village and the president waved from the rear during a brief trip with President Benjamin Harrison years ago.
Five gunmen robbed a railway mail car near Garrettsville Ohio today fleeing west in a car with five or six mail sacks. One shot was fired as a warning. robbers targeted the Erie train from Cleveland to Pittsburgh and threatened two mail clerks. Payrolls for Republic Steel were expected the next day, with about $75,000 typically involved.
Alexander Rhodes 64 longtime business manager of the University of Georgia died suddenly at his Athens home of a cerebral hemorrhage. Born March 25 1871 in Gordonsville Virginia he led finances from the Georgia State Teachers College through its 1932 unification. He married Helen Pratt Griffin in 1923 and his widow Helen Rhodes is now dean of women. a daughter Sarah Stubbs Rhodes survives.
Atlanta November 7 Governor Eugene Talmadge called on all Georgians to observe the 17th anniversary of the Armistice with solemn remembrance and prayers to avoid foreign entanglements. He urged a two minute silent prayer at 11 a.m. Monday.
Battle Creek Mich November 7 W K Kellogg cereal maker announced an average 12 5 per cent wage rise for all men employes and a permanent six hour day. The new scale starts at 27 dollars for a 36 hour week and Kellogg predicted 20 per cent higher employment if six hours becomes general. He said efficiency morale sickness and accident rates improve with six hours and unit cost falls enough to justify the pay.
Private interests resolved a threatened default on South Carolina 5 C highway bonds after Governor Johnston seized state highway department funds. B Edwards of the South Carolina National Bank said his bank would cover November 15 reimbursements in New York and hold coupons until the highway controversy is settled.
The Goodyear airship Puritan scheduled to arrive in Thomasville today was held up in Birmingham due to bad weather. Local Goodyear dealers Kelzo and Alonzo Singletary said weather conditions made departure impractical and the visit will be postponed to the next few days or early next week. Public notice will follow when a definite date is set.
Twelve year old Annette Kelly was knocked from her bicycle on South Broad Street near Rose's Ten Cent store when a car backing out without signaling hit her. Witnesses say two women fled the scene after assessing minor injuries and a brief apology was offered. She suffered bruises and shock but returned home and attended school the next day.
Judge W E Thomas fixed November 14 for the trial of John Henry Sloan 21 charged with killing Otis Gay in Moultrie Georgia last month. Attorney W A Covington appointed to defend Sloan. Sloan arrested in Florida after a citizen search for Gay’s slayer led to a fatal shooting of another Black man in a rural area. A coroner's jury found the second slaying committed by unknown parties.
Albany Ga Nov 7 Thomas M Nelson former University of Georgia football star and the first southern player to score against Yale was yesterday elected judge of the court of ordinary of Dougherty County to fill the unexpired term of his father T M Nelson Sr who died here recently Nelson received 848 votes to 435 for J M Tomilson and 45 for W E Rowsey his two opponents

Washington on November 7 reports the Treasury plans a new dollar bill design. Old currency totaling $755,849,177 will be fed into shredding machines and pulped to be remade into fresh bills.

A Housing Clinic under the Federal Housing Administration Georgia division will be held tomorrow in Thomasville. Special field representative D S Bridges will be at the Court House or the Chamber of Commerce offices to assist interested parties with insured mortgages.

Atlanta Nov 7 Governor Eugene Talmadge commuted the death sentence of Ben Berrong to life imprisonment for the murder of his father Bill Berrong in Towns county last year. The commutation followed recommendations from the state prison commission and input from trial jurors the judge B P Gailliard and the warden in charge.
