The New York and American stock exchanges were closed today due to election day. Other markets such as the Chicago Board of Trade and Chicago livestock market stayed open.
Hog receipts for 24 hours ending Tuesday across Albany Columbus Moultrie Thomasville Dothan Jacksonville show steady to 25c gains. U S grades list prices for various weight ranges with hogs and sows quoted, plus Georgia cattle auction results in Cherokee County and surrounding markets with cattle and calf price ranges and weekly comparisons.
Georgia farm prices listed for today include sweet potatoes 2.76 to 3.00 per bushel, bunched turnips 1.75 to 2.00 per dozen, collards 1.28 to 1.50 per dozen, turnip greens 1.25 to 1.50 per bush, pole beans 3.50 to 4.00, butter beans 2.50 to 3.25 per bushel, eggplant 2.50 to 8.00, and bell peppers 3.25 per bushel. poultry quotes show live broilers and fryers 13 4 to 14, delivered plants 14 to 15 3, hens heavy at farms 17, FOB plants 18, light hens 7 7/13 to 8.
Pete Wheeler director of the Georgia State Dept. of Veterans Service says veterans affairs are a multi million dollar business in Thomas County. In September county veterans and dependents received 73114.27 in compensation and education benefits plus 1605 in lump sums and 2000 in burial allowances. Last year the Thomas Grady Mitchell County area shared more than 1% million in benefits. The VA Domiliary operates on a 1.7 million budget in Thomasville.
Lee E Kelly publisher of the Thomasville Times Enterprise spoke at the Pavo Kiwanis weekly dinner meeting. He was introduced by program chairman Hal Cooper. An interclub meeting accompanied the event with Thomasville members Chester Ballamy J M Colvin J R Dillon and Dr W W Gravely visiting along with Mr and Mrs Virgil Griner of Quitman and Jeff Mathews. Wayne Smith presided as vice president.
The State Highway Dept will receive bids Friday November 15 in Atlanta for 26 projects including paving and two bridge constructions on Meigs-Coolidge Rd FAS 1988. The work covers about 4 miles of grading paving from Little Ochlochnee River to Ga 202 then along the Thomas Colquitt line to Chastain. Total Georgia highway work estimated at about 12 million dollars.
The Governor's Commission to Improve Education finds unequal local support and tax rates harm Georgia school quality. About 108 of 156 counties pay less than their expected share, with half of independent systems underfunded. The panel urges power to compel local support and discusses consolidation and costs.
Oleous Haslam Lewis 71 former banker and past lieutenant governor of the Third Kiwanis District died at home after a long illness. Services set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Meigs Baptist Church with three ministers officiating. Burial at Pinehurst Cemetery. Braswell Funeral Home in charge. Survived by wife Carey Gilbert Lewis four brothers and three sisters.
Mrs J D Edmondson aged 82 of Colquitt County died Friday after an extended illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at Evelyn Methodist Church with burial in Westview Cemetery. Survived by three sons Chester Edmondson Thomasville J E Edmondson and Dalton Edmondson two daughters Miss Mabel Edmondson and Mrs J B Flowers a brother J L Gay nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Communications workers Local 3221 in Thomasville will meet at 8 p m in City Hall courtroom to decide on the upcoming Christmas Party. President H W Parramore urged all members to attend as stores and businesses prepare to close for one day.
The Thomas County Baptist Association will hold a clinic for its officers at First Baptist Church on Friday. The program will start at an unspecified time.
Coats and Clark Inc. hosts its annual barbecue for employees and guests on Saturday November 9 at the company recreation area on Smith Ave. Competitive sports begin at 10 am. Dinner served at 1 pm with games and recreation to follow. The evening features the traditional barbecue dance.
