Fire dangers ease and drought wanes in parts of the East and Midwest as rain and snow fall. In Kentucky fires scorch 6000 acres near Harlan while Tennessee faces multiple blazes. Michigan lifts fire bans after improving conditions.
A new Air Force obligation adds 3 268 000 to Thiokol Chemical Corp spending for solid propellant motor research and development. Thiokol reports progress on a space booster plant near Brunswick Georgia and near Huntsville Alabama with a test production plan next year.
Atlanta AP report states that state tax collections exceed budget estimates for the year ending next June 30. Revenue commissioner Hiram Undercoffer said October receipts were 2 million higher than a year ago, with excise taxes up 6.5 percent for October and 7.92 percent for the first four months. He notes the growth continues despite a shorter reporting period and forecasts an annual increase around 8 percent per month.
James W. Whittaker, first American to reach Everest summit, is named to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission by Gov. Rosellini. The 34 year old from Redmond operates a Seattle sporting goods store and takes a half salary role effective today.

President Kennedy told reporters he doubts the Soviet Union will abandon the moon program and says the United States should stay with its own plan. He notes Khrushchev’s remarks but believes the Soviets will act with adequate preparation and continue space efforts. Kennedy also discusses Germany troops in Europe and potential U.S. wheat talks with the Soviets. He supports Johnson as running mate and hints at revision debate with Goldwater if opposed in 1964.
Congress approves a nearly 14 million authorization for Georgia military construction. The package also authorizes 1.642 billion for national and overseas projects with funds not yet appropriated. In Macon Georgia AP reports a forecasted shower may assist but forestry specialists urge a real deluge to curb wildfire risk. The Georgia Forestry Commission logged 88 fires burning 189 acres on Thursday, raising totals to 610 fires and 1 461 acres since Oct 19. The largest blaze scorched 26 acres in Sure County, while the Rome district saw 53 plus acres lost and 17 fires in the 7th District. Weather Bureau notes no meaningful rain since Sept 29.
Seven Soviet manufacturing executives arrive in Fitzgerald on Tuesday to inspect the pants factory of H.R. Kaminsky & Sons. The group includes seven women and four men on a tour of U S factories. Kaminsky previously led an American manufacturers delegation to the Soviet Union. The Russians will also visit Atlanta Newnan and Ashburn.
