Income Tax and Gas Tax Hike Planned by House Committee
Washington May 22 The house ways and means committee approved a program to raise income and gasoline taxes to fund a 3.3 million public works bond issue. The plan would boost normal income tax rates to 6 percent for up to 4 000 and 10 percent above that, tax corporate dividends, and levy a 4 per cent gas tax per gallon. It would total about 221 million dollars, replacing a proposed 115 percent manufacturers tax and a breakfast tax. The measure includes provisions for possible tax suspensions if debt conditions change and seeks rapid reporting to the full house.
Increased Income and Gasoline Taxes OK’d by House Panel
Washington May 22 The house ways and means committee adopted the administration tax plan for higher income and gasoline taxes and a levy on corporate dividends to raise 221 million dollars for interest and sinking fund on a 3.3 billion dollar public works bond issue. The vote was 13 to 9. The package adds 4 of one cent per gallon on gasoline and increases the normal income tax to 6 percent for the first four thousand dollars of net income and 10 percent on larger incomes. Corporate dividends would be taxed at the income rates. The manufacturers excise levy was rejected.
