P J Callaway trustee of Central of Georgia Railway asks the Interstate Commerce Commission to authorize sale of 1,150,080 in notes for the third payment on eight Lima Locomotive Works engines costing 1,437,600 total. Engines to be delivered in July to meet wartime demands. Expected savings cut maintenance from 26 to about 6 cents a mile over five years.
County commissioners meet in Thomasville on May 11 1943 with all members present. They approve minutes, receive Welfare and county home demonstration reports, and discuss consolidating City and County Health Depts to improve sanitation around Finney General Hospital and Thomasville Air Base. Board names successors to Welfare Board, approves numerous expenditures, and authorizes land acquisitions for airport expansion and sanitary sewage projects.
In Muscle Shoals Alabama on May 19 President hailed the TVA as it marked its 10th anniversary. TVA leaders David Lilienthal and James Pope joined Gov Prentice Cooper and Lt Gov L H Ellis in Florence for speeches. Lilienthal stressed wartime forge can yield peacetime plowshares and noted postwar plans for fertilizers minerals light metals and plastics industries.
