Report from Bettyfern, four miles from Gort in Galway, says three men riding in a motor car were ambushed by about forty assailants last night. Reinforcements reached the scene and were fired upon. one constable was wounded.

Washington May 16 The nomination of Frank A Lingey as Federal attorney for the western district of North Carolina faced opposition in the Senate judiciary committee. Senators Horati and Reed are understood to have opposed immediate approval and the nomination was referred to a subcommittee.
Reported attacks describe raiders entering houses with relatives present, tying victims, rigging furniture with kerosene, and setting fires. The Royal Irish Constabulary faced the onslaught as families endured brutal, systematic violence during the assaults.
Reports say five men have been arrested and taken to Pikeville, Kentucky. Little fighting was reported along the battle line as of this morning.
Senator Sutherland of West Virginia called Secretary Weeks urging proclamations signed by the President to declare martial law in the strike area of West Virginia and Kentucky.

New York May 16 Supreme Court fined thirteen co corporations in the Association of Dealers in Mason Building Materials up to 7500 dollars each after they pleaded guilty May 3 to violations of state and trust laws. Nineteen individuals were fined each. The charges stem from legislative activity connected to the building materials tie in.
Washington May 14 The War Finance Corporation announced approval of advances totaling two million dollars to finance cotton shipments to foreign ports for warehousing and distribution. It said one point six million dollars had been advanced to date for cotton already exported, with further financing to cover export of cotton from American interiors and ports for shipments October to December. Distributions target Liverpool Havre Trieste Genoa Venice and Bremen to support stocks near consumption.
