Community event raises funds at infirmary entertainment

Volunteers and attendees gathered for an infirmary benefit with a diverse program. Joseph Jeger and local residents attended, featuring music from the band and vocal numbers, plus sewing and acting services by church and Red Cross volunteers. A Saturday horse race sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary drew veterans and donors, followed by a Catholic Mass service at the chapel.

Bus Plan Seen For Area

The Interstate Commerce Commission hearing in Jacksonville reviewed Tamiami Trail Tours plan for new bus service between St George Callahan and Jacksonville via a shorter route through Georgia and Florida. Proposals include four daily schedules with routes from Bainbridge Cairo Thomasville Pensacola Tallahassee Columbus Albany Moultrie and using the Jacksonville terminal of Service Coach Lines. The service would carry light express and passenger traffic on a route shortened by about 12 to 15 miles with further reductions possible if new links are built.

He claims he did not want to go back to Germany and explains his escape from Butner POW camp in 1945. Brooks Rape Trial Postponed in Brooks County Case

Vernon Brooks a 17 year old African American is charged with raping a 28 year old married white woman in Quitman Georgia. The trial was postponed at the state’s request due to incomplete evidence examination by the State Crime Laboratory. Postal receipts at the Thomasville Post Office rose in fiscal 1959 and the four week period ending May 1 1959. For 11 accounting periods in fiscal 1959 receipts totaled 181545 versus 146881 in 1958. The four week period from April 4 to May 1 1959 brought in 14870 compared with 11844 in 1958.

City police report a 52 year old Thomasville man sustained minor injuries when his 1959 car driven by Robert J. Moore of Grant Street ran out of control and crashed into a ditch near 1606 Fletcher Street. Vehicle fenders were damaged in the mishap.
