Blakely Georgia May 11 The Springfield School fifteen miles south of here was destroyed yesterday by fire. Superintendent B R Davis estimated the loss at eight thousand dollars. The wooden structure had been rebuilt in 1985 after a prior fire, the second county school building lost to fire within a year. Lightning struck the Blakely building last June and set it afire.
The year showed significantly higher fatalities from home accidents compared with occupational incidents, with deaths roughly doubling in the home setting. Authorities note safety gaps at residences contributing to the disparity.
Atlanta May 11 A contractor connected with Hiram W Evans sold sand asphalt for 4.11 a ton to the state while offering the same material for 3.00 a ton for a federal aid project in the same county. E A Logan a former state highway engineer testified on the stand in Fulton superior court detailing bids and costs in Treutlen and Laurens counties and the roles of Smith Evans and Rivers in the case.
Chauncey Sparks, Eufaula lawyer, won the Alabama Democratic gubernatorial nomination by 6071 votes in last Tuesday's primary. He received 145,798 ballots in official totals certified by county officials for canvassing in Montgomery.
Walter J. Seeley of Middletown proposes government issued coupon hooks from 1 to 10 dollars with each ticket worth 5 to 50 cents. Servicemen could buy what they want at post exchanges, saving postage, storage space, and avoiding unwanted gifts. The USO advises practical nonperishable, compact items and proper addressing for overseas shipments.
Charles William Quinn died at his Miami Florida home after years of ill health. The Thomasville Georgia native, born December 19 1888, served in World War I with the 82nd Division. Funeral services are planned in Miami with a graveside service in Thomasville. Surviving are his wife Edythe Wheeler, three sisters, three nephews and one niece.
Valdosta Ga May 11 Two of the four flying officers killed in the mid air crash near Hahira were roommates during air training and were commissioned together two weeks ago They were Second Lieutenants John W Prinz Jr and Gresham Penn Redden of Baltimore killed Saturday in the collision with another plane Prinz and Redden were based at Spence Field Moultrie Harris Burrwood La and James Harold Harper Portland Tenn Lieutenants Prinz and Redden trained at Maxwell Field Arcadia Shaw Field Sumter and were instructors at Spence Field Prinz parents said he was to marry on his first furlough to Miss Dorothy L Schene of New Rochelle N Y.
Tokyo broadcasts report Col Wade D Killen chief of state of Filipino American forces captured on Mindanao as Japanese advance on the Cagayan Tagoloan front. Washington says no information. Killen born Colorado 1894. Army service since 1917. CGS and infantry training background noted.

San Francisco May 11 Allied bombers returning from an independent mission over the Coral Sea watched the conflict from grandstand positions at 18000 feet and the crewmen made vivid photographs. War correspondent Norman Stockton quoted said about 500 planes took part and both sides used torpedo carriers and dive bombers. The images showed six Japanese warships including two aircraft carriers weaving white circles as ships dodged bombs and the carrier before and during strikes.
Berlin reports from May 11 say a Vichy dispatch claims the United States demanded demobilization of French warships in Martinique and permission for U. S. forces to garrison the Caribbean island. The note also says Washington seeks surrender of several tankers at Fort de France and mentions the carrier Bearn and two cruisers in harbor since France fell.
Tokyo based Japanese broadcasts quote a Mindanao dispatch stating Major General William F. Sharp, commander of American Filipino forces in Mindanao, surrendered unconditionally. The report claims four days after Corregidor’s fall all American Filipino forces in the Philippines surrendered.
