Berlin dispatch reports Britain accepted a Soviet offer amid German claims Poland must answer Beck's Danzig stance. Hitler and Ribbentrop conferred after Beck's address. Dienst Aud Deutschland noted Poland's position could trap a solution but urged progress on the Danzig issue.
Polish Foreign Minister Beck firmly rejected Hitler's demands for Danzig and a Polish corridor, stating Poland will not surrender sovereignty. He offered only conditional talks, with a memorandum to Berlin and broad support from diplomats including the U.S. ambassador. Beck outlined four Poland stands to negotiations, emphasizing rights in overseas trade, maritime policy, and corridor sovereignty.
London May 6 The British government accepted a Soviet proposal to form a three power military alliance and a supplementary plan to aid Poland and Romania though direct aid terms were not disclosed. The move follows a cabinet committee meeting and aims to counter German pressure while keeping promises of aid to Poland and Romania.
President Roosevelt greeted Nicaragua's Anastasio Somoza in an ornate Washington ceremony at Union Station and paraded along Pennsylvania Avenue. Dignitaries, troops, and a guard of aircraft accompanied the leaders as flags from both nations waved in a display described as among the capital's most lavish receptions.
