The Associated Press reports a mixed close with several blue chips edging higher while others pull back. General Motors and Ford show small declines, while Polaroid and Boeing slip modestly. The Dow Jones average ends little changed as investors wait for further earnings and economic data.
AP dispatch from archdisville reports six people killed in Georgia traffic crashes over the weekend. Victims include Mary Jemmer, 48, of Louisville. Garth Parker, 17, of Rossville. Lula Boatwright, 17, of Mershon. Mallory Reed, 33, of Guyton. Bay infant, 9 months, of Canton. and Cecil Reed, 30, of Alma.
Hog receipts for a three day period ended Monday totaled 3 000 at packing plants in Albany Columbus Moultrie Thomasville Ga Dothan Jacksonville and Chicago Illinois with prices 14.75 to 18.00 for various weights and grades. In Chicago receipts reached 7 500 with barrows and gilts 25 to 35 cents higher and prices 16.00 to 16.80 for No 1 and mixed grades.
AP reports a light supply with liberal receipts over the weekend. Prices include sweet potatoes 2.50 to 3.00. turnips 1.50. collards 1.25 to 1.50. greens and mustard 1.25 to 1.75. green onions 0.65 to 1.25. Florida strawberries 0.38 per pint. California asparagus crates 5.75 to 6.00. bell peppers 4.50 to 8.75. yellow crookneck squash 4.50 to 5.00.
Walter Leo Odom a carpenter contractor died after a three month illness Saturday night in St He was 59 and a native of Metcalf. Funeral services are set for 3 p m today at Dawson Street Baptist Church with Rev Robert H E Blackburn and Rev Bob Atkins officiating. Burial follows at Laurel Hill Cemetery under Kirkland Cray Hughes supervision. He leaves a widow Lei la Evelyn Shepherd Odom a son Emory C Odom of Atlanta a daughter Mrs Walter Kee ver of Charlotte NC a mother Mrs W B Odom of Thomasville three brothers Robert Little and Clifford Odom of Miami and Gladys Odom J W Hurst and others. He had lived in the area nine years and was a deacon and Sunday School worker at Dawson Street Baptist Church. He married in Thomasville April 30 1925.
Robert J. McClenny 60 a Valdosta area figure in local business civic and religious circles died at his home after an illness. Funeral services were conducted by Rev Tom Whiting and Rev Gordy Shearhouse with burial in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Born in Oxford Ga he moved to Thomasville then Valdosta in 1936 joining Miller Concrete Pipe Co later starting an accounting practice serving prominent firms. He is survived by wife Ruth Hargrave two daughters Lila and Betty a sister and a brother.
A number of people from Thomasville attended the final rites this afternoon. Attendees included members of his wife's family and Mrs. McClenny's brother Butch Hargrave of Bainbridge. Illness kept both Mr. and Mrs. Hargrave from traveling to Valdosta for the service. Mrs. Hargrave has been seriously ill for weeks and Mr. Hargrave, longtime Times-Enterprise business manager, has been confined to his room for three weeks. Others from here attending included Mrs. Howard Thompson and Mrs. Johnnie Cater.
At St Joseph Roman Catholic High School in St Joseph Michigan the practice of dating one person exclusively is banned. Students who go steady cannot hold school offices or participate in athletics or activities. Parish priests urged parents to discourage the habit until late in the senior year.
Seven truckloads of eight miles of eight inch steel pipe depart Thomasville bound for central Florida, aimed at draining floodwaters in the Tampa to Orlando region. OCDM officials hold a conference with Gov Collins and local leaders to outline federal aid and emergency repair measures for damaged streets, highways, and facilities.
State Patrol reports two separate crashes over the weekend. James R. Culpepper, 19, of Meigs collided with C. F. Bond, 58, of Pelham. Bond suffered head cuts. In the Riverville incident, Andrew L. James, 18, of Coolidge and Russell Sloan Jr., 17, of Newton collided. neither was seriously injured.
The East Side Baptist Church begins a special revival at 7:30 this evening through Sunday with visiting evangelist Dr. Charles Bishop from Calvaryist Church. Raymond Kelly leads music and Rev Cham McMillen of East Side promises an entertaining program to attract all interested people.
The quarterly district rally of Odd Fellows will be Tuesday at Pine Woods Lodge hall 120 Broad St. Plans announced by John Herring secretary to the local lodge. Election of district officers for the Grand Lodge of Georgia will be highlighted by the business session presided by C M Moore district deputy grand marshal and his staff. Supper at 7 p.m. by Rebekah Lodge members. ICOFP and Rebekah members and spouses invited.
Sheriff Callice Law announced three Camilla men were jailed on illegal liquor charges after weekend arrests. John Henry Smith 48 Willie Gus Hines 53 and Willie B. Davis 40 were stopped by Meigs officers then handed to the sheriff. Davis faced DUI and non tax paid whiskey charges. Smith and Hines faced illegal liquor charges. A car and 10 gallons moonshine were seized. all suspects identified as Negro residents of Camilla.
