Atlanta March 18 AP Georgia operates 382 community canning plants under vocational teachers, with a plant within ten to fifteen miles of every farm. Last year these plants canned 12 million units for 250 000 people across 50 000 families, about a quarter of the state’s farm population. This year counties and schools have bought 200 carloads of cans, to be sold to farmers and others. Some towns saw 75 percent of residents participate, each family canning at least 200 cans. crowding has led to restrictions limiting use to county residents in some areas.
Atlanta March 18 The United States faces a critical shortage of animal feeds if production materials are not conserved. Dean Paul Chapman of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture warned at a feed manufacturers meeting that shortages could curb animal product output. A southeastern conference plan was set to coordinate actions among feeders farmers and industry leaders.
Montgomery March 18 First Class Private Howard B. Roraback of Pittsfield Massachusetts received the soldier's medal for valor from Maj. Gen. Ralph Royce. He risked his life January 11 to reach Lt. Clayton C. Wheat trapped in a submerged airplane in the Alabama River. He swam 20 feet in icy water amid gasoline explosion danger.
