Florence Arizona March 16 The Arizona board of pardons heard an attorney allege the jury sought death to force Mrs Winnie Ruth Judd to talk four jurors believed a board commutation would occur and reveal further suspects in the Leroi and Samuelson slayings Judd sentenced to hang April 14 seeks life. four jurors were not recalled as witnesses and hearings resume next week.

Washington March 16 The Senate accepted amendments to the economy bill as Roosevelt’s budget balancing plan moves toward final passage in the house. Beer legalization moves in the Senate with leaders seeking passage tonight. Farm relief and unemployment messages expected from the White House. Committee approved diplomatic nominations Jesse Straus for Paris and Josephus Daniels for Mexico City.
Washington March 16 A vote on whether the house will accept senate amendments to the executive's 500 million economy bill looms as President Roosevelt decides. The senate passed the measure 62 to 13 after amendments trimmed savings by about 10 million but kept authority to cut veterans and federal salaries. House leaders say the president will decide whether to accept the changes. Only four democratic senators oppose the move.
The measure would let the president cut pensions and civilian and military pay, with Civil War veterans spared. Civilian salaries including lawmakers and the VP would fall, effective soon, with further cuts possible after two years. Louis A. Johnson of the American Legion urged support from posts.
Fire in Aiken, March 16, destroyed the winter residence of Mr and Mrs J Oscar Williams of Short Hill New Jersey. The colonial house moved from Athens Georgia in 1928 to two miles northwest of Aiken.
