New volunteers will be trained in military defense and ready if the existing company is ordered on guard duty elsewhere. The current unit of thirty rifles is led by Captain M. A. Brantley Jr. and is regarded as one of the best trained groups in the state.
Meigs March 12 fire department responded to the Banks residence when an oil burner ignited kerosene left on the stove. Firefighters arrived to find the blaze under control after the stove was moved from the home to the yard.
Meigs March 12. Tuesday afternoon around 2 30 fire alarm summoned the fire department at once to a home on West Marshall Street. The fire was small and quickly extinguished with only slight damage.
Funeral services were conducted at the Agyst Baptist Church for Mrs. Alta Cain who died after several weeks of illness. Rev. D. P. Lee and Rev. W. E. McTier officiated with interment in Cairo cemetery. She is survived by husband Alto Cain Jr a daughter Miss Francis Cain and her father Mr Joe Wilcox among others.
