Tennessee widow still receives Confederate pension due to uncertain Civil War service

For 16 years Tennessee has paid a $175 monthly widow’s pension to Texanna Whitfield, who suspects her husband joined Union forces but cannot confirm discharge papers. The state abolished its Civil War pension board five years ago, leaving officials unsure how to halt payments. Records show Robert Whitfield served in Company E, 61st U.S. Colored Troops, 1864–65.
