Beaufort Officer Alters Testimony in Warship Shooting Trial

Beaufort witnesses for the defense denied the accusation that Marshal Munns aimed to arrest marine Winer after he allegedly drank and behaved OB. State witnesses disputed those statements. Munns said he had one cartridge and warned Winer about intoxication. Several Port Royal officials testified to Munns’ good character and sobriety, while Sergt. Jones and Sergt. Galbaugh gave conflicting accounts of who questioned the dead man. The defense rested, attorneys argued, and the jury retired after receiving the case.
