Three Prisoners Escape Clarke County Jail
Three prisoners overpowered Deputy Sheriff Robert Lumley on the fourth floor of the Clarke County courthouse in Athens and fled the jail. George McCannon, 31, a forgery convict, Ernest Looney, 20, a burglary suspect, and Ronald Rose, 23, awaiting sentencing on an illegal whisky charge, escaped after grabbing the deputy's pistol and keys. FBI agents joined local officers in the manhunt.
