Chafee to Recommend Pentagon Cutback on F14 Orders
Secretary of the Navy John H. Chafee plans a Pentagon cutback in the F14 fighter order amid rising costs. He says the five year plan may fall short of original numbers, as Packard directs a reexamination of development and production. The program manager, Captain Lionel F. Ames Jr., will be reassigned later this year, with no link to F14 issues. The price for the program stands around 10.3 billion dollars, about 14.3 million per aircraft.
