The Canadian Pacific Railway reports 964 lives lost in the Empress of Ireland disaster with 753 passengers and 211 crew among the dead. Of 403 saved, 201 were passengers and 202 crew.
More than three hundred bodies recovered from the Empress of Ireland disaster with 355 survivors en route home. The Victoria government tender Lady Grey carried most of the recovered dead, while Captain Kendall remains injured at Rimouski. A million dollars in silver bars also went down with the ship shipped from Cobalt for England.
Survivors totaling 355 were saved from 1,387 on the Empress of Ireland after a collision with Storstad. The wreck near Rimouski sent bodies to a makeshift morgue as divers recovered victims. Storstad arrived in port. Captain Kendall survived, praising his duty as the ship sank.
The Dominion Coal Company, which chartered the Danish collier Storstad, has not heard from Captain Anderson about the collision.
