Walter Sills was shot and killed by Major Johnson in Johnsons room at the Brenard hotel after a fight Saturday afternoon. In a prior struggle Johnson shattered a chair and a showcase before Sills went to Johnsons room where Johnson fired seven shots with an automatic pistol as Sills entered, six hitting him and causing immediate death. Johnson surrendered to officers after the shooting.
The first bale of the season sold at auction in Savannah for forty cents a pound and the proceeds were donated to the Red Cross. A second bale arrived an hour later and was bought by a factory for the same price, also donated to the Red Cross fund.
