Vienna report says Premier Temsky of the Ukrainian government warns of a dire fate under Russians Germans and Poles and Musscovites. He vows Ukraine will resist joining Russia and laments foreign volunteers aiding Poland while epidemics threaten.
Rome July 14 Nearly two million two hundred thousand soldiers of the Italian army have been demobilized since the signing of the armistice according to a government statement. The remaining effectives in service are about two million men.
Washington July 14 President Wilson was invited to go to South Carolina on September 29 to review the Thirtieth Division which helped the British army break the Hindenburg line before Amiens last fall. Senators Smith and Dial extended the invitation and the President might accept if able.
In Alpha Ohio at the University of Pennsylvania summer school fraternity house, Prof Benjamin F. Shappelle head of Romantic Languages shot and killed a masked burglar who had threatened residents. The burglar remains unidentified and was found dead at the scene.
Senator Swanson of the Foreign Relations Committee urged the United States to support the League covenant, calling it one of the world's greatest documents and saying rejection would hurt American integrity. He argued the League would not create a super government, would protect national interests, and align with the Monroe Doctrine.
Two women and one man were seriously hurt today when strikers at the Corn Products Refining Company Argo Illinois plant stopped street cars carrying union men and clashed with armed guards aboard the cars. A number of shots were fired.
Geneva July 14 The Romanian bureau at Berne says Serbian forces occupying Bremesvar 72 miles northeast of Belgrade are evacuating the city and taking valuable items including railroad equipment factory machinery animals and household goods The Romanian government reportedly declines another offer from Lenine for a Romania Russia alliance.
Washington reports intensify as daylight saving repeal becomes a key issue in the agricultural appropriation bill. House leaders aim to pass over the president’s veto, needing a two thirds majority but lacking 23 votes.
Washington July 22 a special drive for the collection of luxury tax was announced today by the Bureau of Internal Revenue. Instructions have been sent to collectors to begin a thorough canvass for delinquents not paying the full amount due on sales of soft drinks theatre admissions club dues and other taxes.
July 14 Washington The President met with a group of senators and representatives at the White House to discuss various topics. The engagement was his first since returning from Paris. Senator Hitchock and Commissioner Roper of the Internal Revenue Service discussed wartime and constitutional prohibition enforcement and the question of the President's appearance before the committee. Prior to the meetings the President sent Bastille Day greetings to France.
In St Louis on July 15 delegates discussed unifying local and national professional and business women’s clubs into a single centrally directed body as the major issue before the Woman’s Association of Commerce conventions.
In Peggy Thompsons dining spot a dispute over payment led to Herbert Tripp slashing Will Anderson with a knife after Anderson allegedly advanced with a chair. Anderson, a Black man known for local contests, died at about 4 AM after being wounded in the jugular area. Tripp, recently returned from the army, was detained by the sheriff.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee opens consideration of the peace treaty with the league covenant. Resolutions would seek information from Wilson about a secret Germany Japan treaty and the Shantung settlement. Debate on unreserved ratification to begin in the Senate with Swanson leading the opening and the president expected to confer with senators.
Coblenz July 12 The American soldiers who captured Cantigny and won other victories perform in a ring house this week for soldiers along the Rhine. Hundreds of German civilians are admitted to witness the performances for one mark.
Danville Virginia July 14 five thousand employees of Riverside and Dan River Cotton Mills will gain a voice in plant conditions through a house of 117 workers and a senate of 59 foremen. The bodies will act alongside a cabinet of mill executives with veto power and sessions on company time.
L. G. Strip Ling, 88, indicted with W. C. Swift on murder charges in the Phillip Lamar and Abraham Kimbrell case, killed himself at his Macon home after fearing a Bibb county trial and life in prison. His brother testified he believed he would be convicted. his body was found in a bathroom.
Paris July 14 The allied and American troops begin a triumphal march at eight this morning under clear skies. Wounded soldiers in civilian clothes lead the parade as guns fire at one minute intervals. President Poincare places a wreath at the Cenotaph Arch of Triumph amid cheers for Pershing and other American representatives.
Berlin dispatches report German Finance Minister Erberger announced a proposed property levy in Germany starting at five thousand marks and rising to sixty five percent for property valued above three million marks. The plan scales up to ten percent for values up to fifty thousand marks.
Army officers in Coblenz uncover a theft ring planning to ship food tires and other supplies to Germany. Several Germans were arrested. losses are estimated in the millions of marks.
Reports from Vienna describe Fiume as quiet with the Italian provost marshal keeping order. Italian soldiers and carbineers are seen on streets while French forces stay in barracks and drill. Two French and two Italian warships anchor in the harbor as handbills threaten Italy or Death and Jagoslav signs are removed.
Photographs of the President's arrival in New York and early moments of the Willard Dempsey fight appear in this morning's papers spread by the B-34.
Henry Ford testified in his libel suit against the Chicago Daily Tribune at Mount Clemens Michigan. He was called as a Tribune witness and his son Edsel followed on the stand. Ford described dedicating his life to abolishing war and discussed hiring Delavigne to write of him, then returned to his business.
Washington reports June ship deliveries totaled 118 ships of 578 583 deadweight tons. The Shipping Board announced the month saw ninety seven ships launched.
