Engineer W W Phillips known as Uncle Wash died after Coast Line train 178 collided with a siding box cars near Newark five miles from Thomasville. He remained at his post as the crash wrecked five cars and derailed two coaches, with passengers unharmed except for fright.
Police in Thomasville have arrested Bran Man pending a thorough investigation after passengers reported very slight bruises following the incident.
A local police officer swore out a warrant charging criminal negligence against James Fields, the brakeman on freight train No. 158 involved in a wreck near Thomasville. Police believe the switch was left open. Fields says he manually reset it and rode the engine back to the train. Wreck victims include Mrs. C. P. Howard and Miss Grace Wood with minor injuries.
In El Paso on July 12 General Pascual Orozco failed to appear in Federal Court as charged with conspiracy to violate U S neutrality. His seventy five hundred dollar bond is forfeited while General Carraveo and Frank and Ike Alderete, held on similar charges, waive preliminary hearings and await federal grand jury action under heavy guard.
Secretary Lansing begins drafting the U S reply to Germany over submarine warfare as Wilson weighs policy with strained diplomatic ties. Officials foresee no surrender of American rights and likely rejection of German immunity proposal. Meanwhile New York police and federal agents probe a suspected bomb conspiracy against Allied steamships.
