Chicago July 9 state representative John M Bolton was killed in a gangland style shooting during a high speed chase. Investigators weigh motive tied to his effort to legalize handbook betting as witnesses recall gunmen firing from pursuing car.
Senator Richard B. Russell Jr opened his renomination bid in Waycross criticizing Eugene Talmadge and his anti New Deal stance. He blamed Talmadge for opposing social security measures and old age pensions, framing the Georgia race as a test of support for Roosevelt’s policies. Motorcades accompanied his appearance as a federal building dedication and projects spotlighted the event.
Washington July 9 The Interstate Commerce Commission reported higher railroad employment in April with class one railways listing 1,049,723 workers. This compares with 1,021,014 in March and marks an increase of 72,634 from April of the previous year.

Washington on July 9 the Works Progress Administration reported a continuing drop in payrolls since February Aubrey Williams deputy administrator said on June 25 the number of workers on the rails fell to 2268542 the lowest since large scale operations began last November the total employed under the works program also hit a new low at 3338267 on the same date
New York July 9 Mrs Ruth Bryan Owen America minister to Denmark and daughter of the late William Jennings Bryan welcomed tall blue eyed Danish Captain Boerge Rohde whom she will marry soon. Marriage time and place depend on plans of others not disclosed. Rohde from Danish life guards arrived aboard Drottningholm and stayed at Sands Point estate of Mr and Mrs Robert Lehman.
Fort Gaines Georgia reports Clay County officials announce no tax levy for the year citing lack of state funds and debt. The commission also deposits 25000 dollars for hard times while convict populations are zero and courts run only a few days annually.

Vienna July 9 a Heimwehr spokesman said a far reaching secret agreement with Germany and Italy aims to prevent a restoration of the Hapsburg throne in Austria for three years. The plan includes Germany recognizing Ethiopian sovereignty and guaranteeing three year independence, Italy ensuring no restoration, Austria and Germany ironing out disputes before September 15, and nationalist influence to be incorporated into Austria with Nazi activity allowed under control.
Detroit reports a man sleeping in his back yard to keep cool was run over by an automobile driven into a garage. E Brown, 50, suffered fractured ribs. The driver, George Brown, claimed he did not see his father and two brothers asleep nearby. another brother and a Robert were also present and unharmed.
United States Senator Richard B. Russell Jr. opened his campaign for re nomination in Waycross Georgia denouncing Governor Eugene Talmadge for blocking federal old age pension money. He praised a plan to fund Georgia's aged with $15 a month via a state pension system without state contributions. He contrasted Roosevelt support with Talmadge opposition and urged voters to back him for six more years.

Chicago reports a brief cooldown as showers cooled temperatures from 82 to 76 and a 0.5 inch rainfall offered temporary relief after two days of 90s. Forecaster Lloyd warned the heat wave may return tomorrow with a forecast high near 90. Across Washington the drought committee weighs emergency drought ratings for 268 counties.
Atlanta July 9 Capital City Country Club golfers voted to install a sprinkler system watering all fairways regularly as needed, promising relief from drought worries.
Light house tide predictions show high and low cycles for Friday July 10 with high at 6:36 p.m. and low at 2:23 p.m. and 6:25 a.m. Light south wind expected. observers advised to note tide changes around the harbor.
