June was a wet month with 21.21 inches observed and 3.94 inches of rain on the 4th and 9th causing crop damage. Funnel clouds were seen southeast of the station on the 3rd and 4th. Downtown rainfall since January 1 totaled 28.64 inches, 2.36 inches below normal.
Air Force Lt. David A. Steeves described his 54 day ordeal after bailing out May 9 near Sequoia Kings Canyon. He crawled 12 miles through ice and snow to a ranger cabin, subsisting on canned beans and fish, aided by two hikers who helped contact his family.
In Eau Gallie Florida Roger Beatty, stepfather of 9 year old Alan Rice killed by an 11 foot alligator, vows to remove gators from Morse Creek despite protections. He warns legal action will follow if authorities stop the cleanup, noting the gator’s stomach confirms it as the killer. Funeral services for Mrs. L. C. Lanier aged 84 were conducted Saturday in Millen Georgia. A lifelong resident and frequent Thomasville visitor she had been in failing health for several years and was grandmother of Gene Sampson of Thomasville.
Robert Briscoe failed to win a second term as Dublin’s Jewish lord mayor after a tied vote with Alderman James Carroll. A hat draw determined Carroll as the successor, a result Briscoe accepted noting the identical tie and tradition. He stressed he was not denied due to religion.
The first Methodist Youth Fellowship was organized at Ebenezer Church under Rev K E Clayton. Faye Reichert was named president Betty Scully vice president Jane Wheeler secretary treasurer Kaye Reichert program chair with Mrs Lorene Wheeler as adult advisor. The group read the MYF by-laws and planned to attend a sub district meeting in Metcalf next Monday night.
Georgia Highway Board chairman Roger Lawson announced federal authorization for right-of-way acquisition on a 25 mile stretch of the new interstate north of Tifton. The project starts at the Tifton city limits and runs through Tift and Turner counties to the Crisp line as counties begin appraisals. bids for construction expected late this summer.
