U S Marines engaged an estimated Viet Cong battalion about 500 men during a day of skirmishing in the Ky Lam River Valley near Da Nang. The advance sweep caused moderate Marine casualties and the unit reportedly killed 57. Air strikes continued in two other raids. North Vietnam weather affected operations.
In Mesquite Texas, Kim Artzt four and Dawn Artzt six were found dead inside a neighbor John Stephenson's frozen food chest after a search involving hundreds of volunteers. Police say the children crawled into the freezer during play and suffocated when the door could not be opened. Their father Gary E. Artzt works in KRLD TV's film department.
William Augustin Watt, 86, longtime Thomasville resident and prominent Rotarian, died after a long illness at his home on Tid N. Joawson Street. Founder of the Georgia Rotary Student Fund, he served as Rotary Club president in 1939 40 and District 165 governor in 1943 44. He and wife toured Norway in 1956, earning honors from King Haakon and receiving Knight First Class from Finnish Lions. Funeral arrangements announced.
