Georgia legislators debated whether to adopt Daylight Saving Time amid reapportionment and a bid for governor. Lt. Gov elect George Smith cited polls favoring standard time by about eight to two and many lawmakers at the Capitol signaled opposition to saving time next summer.
President Johnson will ask Congress to back anticrime proposals from a presidential commission that found Washington DC crime surged 116 percent from 1959 to 1965 while similar cities rose 66 percent. The report highlights rising urban crime and calls for federal action.
In Philadelphia the 67th Mummers Parade on Broad Street will draw about 1.5 million spectators. A 72 year old veteran stut ster-stepper returns with banjo as 16,000 bandsmen compete for $75,000 in prizes, an amount raised from $1,725 in 1901.
Two more of the five men who escaped from the Dartmoor prison on December 26 were recaptured today in Ashburton England. Three youths alerted authorities after spotting movement in a barn leading to the capture of Mark Owens aged 32 and John Thompson aged 28. Only one escapee remains at large.
The Vatican issued a message praising British Prime Minister Harold Wilson for seeking negotiations to end the Vietnam War. Pope Paul VI said he received Wilson's message and offered prayers that his efforts be crowned with success for world peace.
In Saigon 23 Pan American passengers were blocked from boarding their flight to Singapore after a dispute between Pan American and the Vietnamese government over landing rights. They waited at Tan Son Nhut airport as government agents refused entry to the incoming plane.
Rep. John Buchanan of Alabama says he will vote against any tax increase to fund the Vietnam War. He urges cutting non essential, non defense spending instead and argues another tax hike is the worst solution.
Five Three Rivers High School juniors died in a New Year’s Eve train crash five miles east of Kalamazoo. The victims were David Hanchon David Hagerman Dennis Lockwood Gary Warner and Teryl Smith all 16 or 17. The boys were Boy Scouts active in church and school.
The U S Commerce Department announced that more than 300 million dollars of goods passed through the Georgia Customs District in the first nine months of 1966. Imports totaled 162 million dollars and exports 147 million, up 28 percent from the same period in 1965.
In Lansing Michigan two gunmen waited at a gas station after fatally shooting an attendant and Deputy Dean Foster 24 of Charlotte and Harold Peterson 27 of Lansing. Eaton County Sheriff Elwin J. Smith identified the victims as the slain officer and a local civilian. Foster was en route to headquarters when the call for a holdup came and was killed.
White haired 72 year old Odd G. Cornell won a parole chance after 40 years in prison for life without parole for murdering his wife and 14 year old stepdaughter in 1926. Governor Brown terminated the no parole edict and Cornell awaits a hearing by the Adult Authority. He is backed by Frankie Carter who offered him a job as caretaker of a Sonoma County summer home. Cornell has worked in multiple prison trades and serves as night watchman in the industrial area.
U S pilots returned to North Vietnam at the end of a New Year truce and claimed seven Communist MIGs shot down in the Red River Valley. The action followed attacks on SAM sites as B52s hit North Vietnamese positions and destroyers engaged shore batteries near Vinh. Spokesmen said all seven MIGs fell to F4C Phantoms. casualties and exact downed locations were not disclosed.
A detailed NASA photograph from Lunar Orbiter II shows Copernicus crater on the moon. The image highlights crater walls and a 3,000-foot horizon promontory named Gay-Lussac, with surrounding features and mountain slopes described for scale.
Police hold Ronnie Lee Ozio 14 over a New Year’s Day attack at an Orange Texas apartment. He allegedly fired rounds at his grandmother Victoria Ozio 77 and Bobby Mayberry 35, and struck his father John Ozio 39 with head wounds. Craig Mayberry 16 was stabbed and Debi Mayberry 14 woke to the assault.
The traveling exhibit of paintings and prints by University of Georgia students is on display this week in the Thom asville Library lobby. Open free to the public, the collection will be shown in over 50 Georgia communities throughout the school year, marking the eighth year of the program run with the university art department and Center for Continuing Education.
Traffic fatalities over New Year weekend reached 359, with safety officials predicting a rise yet not matching past peak holidays. The year 1967 ended with 359 deaths versus 564 last year, while the all–time record for a four day Thanksgiving holiday stood at 748. Conditions included snow, ice, and fog across several states.
