AP reports Representative John J. Riley of South Carolina District 8 died at his beach cottage near Surfside Beach from a heart attack. He was 66 and resided in Sumter, about 95 miles inland, but frequently visited his cottage at Surfside Beach, 18 miles southwest of Myrtle Beach.
Actor Van Johnson severed the tip of his left middle finger in a door accident during The Ghost Man in London. He hopes to return to his leading role in the musical tonight.
Gov. Ernest Vandiver will address the Georgia legislature in an unusual night session on Wednesday January 10. The speech will be broadcast live across Georgia by television and radio networks from 8 30 to 9 p.m with some stations using tape for a 9 p.m. airing.

In New Orleans LA a general cargo ship reported adrift in the Gulf of Mexico raising concerns about the vessel’s fate.
The Georgia Baptist Convention notes 1961 additions by immersion totaling 4 270 in 2960 churches, with 326 baptisms in Omas County, raising statewide membership to 903 404. Total church gifts reach 40 385 952 59, county and local totals shown, including 165 629 from First Baptist Thomasville and property value at 203 352 734 85.
Tax Collector W. H. Stewart said 350 automobile and truck license tags for 1962 were sold between 8 30 a m and 12 noon today. Sales this year were far ahead of 1961 when only 650 tags were issued in three full days. Start with the number 22 indicating a population shrinkage. Annie Moreland Pfister 84 of Thomasville widow of Joseph W. Pfister died at Archbold Memorial Hospital after several months of illness. She lived at 417 E Walcott with son Anderson Pfister and is survived by two other sons, a sister, a brother, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services are set for 3 p.m. Wednesday at First Methodist Church. burial in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Kirkland Cray Hughes Home for Funerals in charge. Pallbearers named.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Mit tle Namonia Daughtry Miller 89 of Pelham who died after a lengthy illness. Rites at Mispah Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Earl Childs and Rev Hugh Lee Brinkley officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. She was a native of Obrian Florida widow of John B Miller. Survived by three sons Norman and J P Miller of Pelham Neadom Miller of Kokomo Indiana three daughters Roy Adams Whigham J F Adams Pelham and Maggie Hawthorne Meigs three brothers W B Daughtry G H Daughtry Pelham H A Daughtry Tampa Fla a sister Mrs Henry Eaton Pelham 19 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.
Mrs Hattie Elizabeth Mobley 35 of Route 1 Whigham died last week at Quitman after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were Sunday at Spring Hill Methodist Church with Revs Allen Brooks Roy Thomas and Leon Van Landingham officiating. Burial followed in Spring Hill Methodist Cemetery. Survivors include three sons Eugene Mobley Whigham Herman Mobley Valdosta and Maxie Mobley Lake City and seven stepchildren with addresses in Climax Panama City Bainbridge Plant City Albany and Cairo.
Funeral services for James Daniel Maxwell 74 of Cairo will be held at 3 p m Wednesday at Miller Funeral Chapel officiated by Rev H D C Fuller. He died Sunday in a Cairo hospital after a prolonged illness. Survived by two sons Samuel D Maxwell and Vernon C Maxwell both of Miami Florida and a daughter Mrs A J Harrison of Miami Florida.
Last rites were held Sunday for James Gordon Merritt 75 of Rt. 1 Climax who died Saturday at home after a long illness. Funeral at Union Springs Baptist Church with Rev R L Crumb officiating. Burial in Union Springs Cemetery. A lifelong Grady County resident he was a retired farmer and a Methodist. Survived by wife Mae Merritt Cairo son Joseph W. Merritt Cairo and three daughters Addie Hall Cairo Louis Merritt Ft Myers Fla Betty Sue Merritt Climax.
A Times-Enterprise caption mix up named M. Dixie as Mrs John Lake Roberts Jr. It should read Miss Dixie, former Norma Ann Buchanan of Elk Park North Carolina, now Mrs Willie Roberts.
