The Associated Press reports 275 traffic fatalities, 55 fire deaths, and 8 million dollars in other accidents, totaling 388. Officials warn the rise could threaten the 374 three day New Year record as fans begin homeward trips amid snow and ice.
The Georgia State Patrol reports 42 traffic fatalities during the 10 day Christmas to New Year holiday period with one day left. A head on crash near Cartersville claimed Ray Lee Quinn 23 of Calhoun. Marvin C Epps 41 of Sparta died when his car overturned north of Sparta. Barbara Rape 11 of Macon died when the car ran off the road in Macon.
The inaugural parade for Governor Farris Bryant features nearly 100 units including 29 bands and 38 floats from across Florida. Tallahassee leaders Charlie Carter and Jess Parker coordinated the event with 75,000 expected spectators along a 1 ½ mile route from Monroe to Tennessee Streets, highlighting state industry tourism and agriculture.
