Washington January dispatch says the tariff issue, long battled in Congress, may reemerge during farm problem discussions. Administration farm leaders favor using processing taxes to fund higher farmer benefits, arguing tariffs skew prices and hurt agriculture relative to industry.
Fragmentary notes show dates in 1913 including parcel post launch in the United States and early radio broadcasting, plus a mention of Captain Dreyfus and a 759 marriage entry for George Washington and Martha Cust. The remnants reference Calais and English events from the era.
Atlanta reports tax exemptions and Homestead provisions have cut about $725,000 from county school revenues. The State Department of Education estimates an additional $342,000 needed for teachers’ salaries in 1938 39 due to raises for qualification and experience.

Fire Chief S A Mercier and Oxford County deputies joined state insurance investigators at the ruins.
Frank Murphy 45, retiring Michigan governor, took oath as attorney general in the White House study with Justice Reed administering. President Roosevelt and key officials attended as Murphy faces Senate scrutiny over Michigan auto sit-down strikes and his past actions.
Five inmates escaped from the State Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Lima Ohio after overpowering four attendants and fleeing in a stolen car. The group included Frank Haines Chicago Marion Pierce Indianapolis William Blatz Maine William Brucks Highland County Ohio and Russell Nuckles Cleveland. Police widened the manhunt as authorities warned nearby states and noted the fugitives were barefoot in freezing temperatures.
