A freeze disrupts transportation facilities causing over twenty deaths and widespread casualties. Officials report severe cold affecting rail and street networks with continuing risk as recovery operations proceed.
A dynamite blast at the Scranton Sun plant shook the building and shattered nearby windows in Scranton Pennsylvania. Authorities seek the perpetrators, with officials suspecting bootleggers tied to liquor law violations as motive. Three people were injured.
A sweeping cold spell across the United States from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic seaboard produced dozens of deaths and widespread disruption. The Midwest and Great Lakes saw record subzero readings with Bis marck at 34 below, while Kansas City and Portland faced heavy snow, ice and several train incidents leaving casualties. Pittsburgh reported three fatalities from the bitter chill as temperatures remained dangerously low.
Pennsylvania national guardsmen of Company H, 110th Infantry, were expected to join the search for Thelma Young, 17, whose half nude body with a crushed skull was found in a field near her home last Thursday night. Authorities said Clyde You spam, 19, a suspect and John Johnson, 21, both Negro, were held on separate charges including robbery.
San Salvador greeted Col Charles A Lindbergh as ambassador of good will arriving for a New Year visit. He flew from Belize to Lopango, Honduras and then to the capital, where crowds surged to greet him. Lindbergh praised the city and noted the care of his Spirit of St Louis as shops closed for the holiday and President Bosque welcomed the aviator.
Anchorage Alaska Jan 2 Charles A Lindbergh has been invited to make a goodwill air tour of Alaska next summer via a route from New York across Canada to Whitehorse and Dawson Yukon Territory and then to Fairbanks. The Pioneers of Alaska raised the plan and the territorial government backs it with landing fields and several operating commercial airlines supporting the tour.
New York report says Ruth Snyder and Henry Judd Gray near execution week set for Jan 9 at Sing Sing. Governor Alfred E Smith may hear mercy plea after attorneys request on Thursday. Pending letters urge clemency amid public debate on executing a woman.
Waycross Georgia January 2 Mrs Janie Hickcox of Waycross sustained fatal injuries when the automobile she rode in turned over on the Dixie Highway near here The accident occurred early today and the victim died from her injuries at a local hospital.
A northbound interurban car failed to stop at a signal in freezing weather near Glover's Station Marietta resulting in a head on crash with a southbound shop car. Three dead include E Irwin McIntyre T J Hudson and Meyer Metzk. about twelve injured with several critical. Hospitals aided victims as efforts to clear wreckage continued.
C M Kittle, president of Sears Roebuck & Company and former Illinois Central vice president, died in Chicago after a two week illness at age 47. Born in Elkins West Virginia he began in railroading in 1895 and rose to executive ranks before joining Sears in 1924.
United States Marines and Nicaraguan guardsmen clashed with Sandino forces near Quilali. One American was killed and five wounded during the afternoon fight as reinforcement troops moved from Telpaneca. Sandino's forces, about 400 strong, fled to the mountains. rebel losses were undetermined.
Captain R V Comeau of the Rose Ann Belliveau reports the missing Dawn, with Mrs Frances W Grayson and three male companions, likely went down 18 miles northwest of Nauset Beach during a northwest gale while attempting Harbor Grace flight from New York. Pilot Lieut Oskar Omdal likely tried to alight beside the schooner. Radio notes and a Cook Knowles report corroborate a distress call and beacon bearing.
Tangier Morocco January 2 Miss Mercedes Gleitz of London began a second attempt to swim the Gibraltar Straits but abandoned the effort. She previously tried to cross the straits and halted the feat for the day.
Paris dispatch reports Loie Fuller, famed dancer active since the 1890s and friend of Queen Marie, died of pneumonia after a ten day illness at the Plaza Athenee Hotel. Her life included a controversial U S tour episode with Queen Marie in 1926 and late life spent at Neuilly and a Paris hotel.
Winter brings the coldest New Year in fifty years across the south. Florida reports 18 degrees in Pensacola while Jacksonville hits 22 and Tampa nears freezing. Atlanta records 1 degree as the storm sweeps from the northwest, with much of the region experiencing extreme lows and widespread fuel shortages.
