Mexico City reports heavy fighting continuing this forenoon with big siege guns in use. Rebels press Federal artillery, while US Embassy area remains untouched after battery withdrawal. Censorship and broken communications raise concern over possible troop landings to protect foreign nationals.
Washington reports President Taft publicly answered Mexican leader Madero urging withhold and restraint. Secretary of State Knox released Taft’s reply stating Madero was misinformed about U S policy toward Mexico. Taft emphasized early steps toward real peace and cautioned against premature troop actions.
The Taft administration reaffirmed its position on the Mexican revolt and warned Madero that the United States reserves the right to land troops to protect Americans and other foreigners if anarchy worsens.
