Waycross Ga Feb 17 a warrant charging W F Garner Sanford Fla farmer with assault with intent to murder was issued after J C Stephens traffic officer was wounded in a gun battle with occupants of a speeding car later wrecked near Valdosta The warrant cites the automobile owner as Garner and police say he fled to Sanford and Atlanta where officers were alerted to arrest him. Stephens underwent surgery to remove a pistol ball from his back and remained in critical condition. Up to mid morning no arrests had been made.
