The Derby field trials moved into a second day with eleven dogs chosen for the second series. Capt Jack and Irquois show strong potential as weather remains hot and crowds attend. Drawings last night set the all age stake and the Derby is expected to finish this afternoon with the six mile start at Spring Hill.
A.GOOD FARMER reports that reducing cotton heritage does not affect residents as the syrup industry already proves. G W Davis, a respected local, saved costs by growing sugar cane and produced thirty barrels of heavy syrup from two acres, worth about $800, surpassing cotton value and signaling a move into a larger syrup venture.
Jim Hines described as a natural born thief has embezzled pallets from coops and lingerie from clothes lines at a high rate. He is jailed after a two year term and likely to return to his old haunts in striped garb.
A lively Piney Woods Hotel reception hosted by Harvey and Wood invited Thomasville residents and visitors. The corridors and parlors were decorated with bamboo palms pines and ferns as dancers enjoyed an evening of hospitality and music.
Mr H M Atkinson of Atlanta and Mr Gordon Abbot president of the Old Colony Trust Co of Boston are in the city on a combined business and pleasure trip. Both are regarded as able financiers and the Old Colony Trust Co is a well known national institution.
Thomasville resident Mr Geo W Beasley departs for Waycross to take charge of the Journal business department and publication. Described as talented and experienced, he is expected to do well with many good wishes from supporters.
The Thomasville Golf Club celebrated its new clubhouse with tea and an outdoor gallery. Morning match saw Guerin and Nicholls of Thomasville defeat Vose and Hovargue of the Country Club two up and one to play. Afternoon exhibition by Nicholls and Fovargue featured a tight contest, Nicholls winning two up with 73 for 18 holes. Favargue 81.
A nostalgic look at the Thomasville telephone office shows seven thousand six hundred fifty six calls in one day and two hundred forty nine busy signals. The piece praises the line as a sign of busy prosperity and explains why delays occur.
A Monticello train, engine 471, could not stop near the Coast Line depot. The engine smashed through the express room and Van Dyke's restaurant front, stopping with the pilot against the main room wall. No passengers were injured. depot repairs were begun after debris clearance.
The Atlantic Coast Line reports record January 1903 passenger receipts for its Thom asville section, surpassing all previous monthly totals despite T T G opposition. Timely traffic data cited by Mr. T J Bottoms shows Thom asville as a strong regional hub.
Dover Del February 5 Edward Addicks this afternoon withdrew as a candidate for United States senator in the interest of two Republican senators.
Mr J J Conet has suffered pneumonia but is now recovering, and many friends are glad to hear he is improving.
Mr Charley Robinson has been quite sick but is recovering and hoped to be out again soon. The notice reflects a local update on his health and community concern.
A telegram from Albany led Marshal Stephens to arrest Harry Hudson white with a shotgun and grip on a Donalsonville bound train. Hudson, who had stolen the gun in Albany, was taken to the guard house and detained awaiting Albany police arrival.
Dr. H. Ainsworth is appointed medical examiner for the Waycross to Montgomery Coast Line division with headquarters at Thomasville. He will travel frequently in the relief department, and must pass examinations for new employees. The appointment is welcomed and there are many congratulations.
Mr and Mrs A Bennett of this city observed their twenty fifth wedding anniversary last Wednesday. They hosted friends at their Dawson street home and received many handsome presents as they marked a quarter century of marriage.
Sure Shot brought $500 to owner J. W. Canady of Blythe Dale Mo and won the Derby. Iriquois owned by Avent & Duryea of Tennessee finished second. Third prize of $100 went to Jesse Radfield owned by Sherwood of Chicago. Rain delayed the opening. the All Age Stake starts at nine this morning on the Spring Hill road six mile post.
S M Clyatt W W Tim mons W O Tift C W Fulwood Briggs Garson 8 8 Monk and C I Parker of Tifton organize a farmers club. Members plan a corn contest one acre plots with five bushels due from each non winner and a cotton contest with cigars as prizes. A final gathering will reveal methods and plans for another year.
A memorial tribute notes Mrs G W Herring's unselfish life and deep service to her community. She supported missions and aid to the poor, shaping a quiet but strong Christian influence at home and town. The note offers sympathy to her husband and family from the Mission Society and committee members.
From Metcalfe Georgia the town proclaims high prosperity with cotton shipments up this year and strong merchant activity. The local school led by Mr T E Dixon and Miss Grace Jenkins reports its best year, desks newly furnished. Reverend T A White preaches at the Baptist church to a large crowd. Mrs Carroll recovers from illness. New merchant Mr Smith of Miccosookile Florida will occupy the Metcalfe building. A visit from Rev Ed F Cook and the first quarterly conference are scheduled for next weekend. Ansley Stringer has gone to Jacksonville for a railroad position.
Fourth Georgian Regiment and various companies held Monday night elections. Col. Wooten and Lieut-Col. Hopkins retained posts, with R L Wylly as Senior Major and T S Hawes re-elected. Capt Peter Preer took over vacant post. Thomasville Guard officers also retained. Adjutant General Corbin’s militia report shows Georgia with 387 commissioned officers, 758 NCOs, 184 musicians, 8,292 privates, and 300,000 unorganized men available for duty, favorable vs other states.
The Chicago Record Herald reports from Doyleston Pennsylvania on January 29 that Thomasville native Tom Davenport, a fireman, leaped into Mill Creek to save four year old Mary Ginamimi who had been dropped from a railroad bridge as a train approached. The child survived with a fractured arm and bruises.
The Thomas county road commissioners met with county officials at the court house to discuss road problems. A large attendance debated highway funding and maintenance with several good suggestions. Most commissioners favor using convict labor for road work.
Superior court met Tuesday at 9 o clock and adjourned until the April term. Several cases were called but none were tried. The lengthy session has accomplished an immense amount of work and the bench congratulates Judge Mitchell on his first term.
Harry Hudson, a young white man, was arrested at the Coast Line depot Wednesday morning and returned to Albany by Sheriff Edwards of Dougherty County. He had asked Mr. Dees in Albany for a fine gun claiming Captain Allen, a friend of Dees, had sent him, then boarded a train to Thomasville before officers intervened.
