City faces a soot and cinder flood as boilers convert to natural gas. Supt. Roland Clayton promises relief soon as current cinder deposits disrupt streets, homes, and businesses and mar uptown’s appearance. Some residents call for strong winds to clear the debris.
An ordination service will be held Sunday at Summerhill Baptist Church for John Gibbs, a native of Colquitt County. The Presbytery meets at 2 30 p m with the ordination following at 3 30 p m and will include an address by Rev Leroy Richster. Gibbs has served in several community churches in this section.
Seventh Day Adventist Church services announced for Saturday at the Municipal Building. Sabbath school begins at 3 p m and the preaching service at 4 p m. Kenneth Harding is pastor and R E Kenyon is associate pastor.
The New York stock list showed a mixed day with gains and losses. Bethlehem Steel fell about 2 points, U S Steel dropped around a point, and Anaconda, United Airlines, and others slid on dividend news and price cuts. Chrysler eased while Ford held steady. A late note references the New York Cotton market.
In Thomasville Georgia on February 1 1687 cattle and hog receipts at major plants include Albany Moultrie Thomasville Tifton Dothan and Jacksonville hog prices show mostly steady to 98 500 higher than week ago with Nos 1 3 180 240 lb barrows and gilts at 17 50 to 18 00. Chicago receipts 6000 hogs steady to 25c lower with Nos 1 3 190 220 lb barrows and gilts 18 35 to 18 65. North Georgia cattle auction in Atlanta reports steady to higher slaughter steers and heifers with Good stockers up to 18 70 and various utility and cutter classes listed with multiple price ranges.
Market notes show steady prices for 7 broilers at farms around 19 to 20 cents f.o.b. In Atlanta and Hans markets, heavy birds at farms run 14 to 16 cents f.o.b. Plants report few sales of light types and overall activity is limited with too few to report exact figures.
Receipts moderate at the Atlanta fruit and vegetable market with cabbage at 1.35 to 1.50 per unit, Georgia turnip greens 1.75 to 2.00, mustard greens 1.25 to 1.80, green onions 0.50 to 0.75 per dozen bunches. Georgia turnips 1.60 to 2.50 per dozen crates. fancy yellow corn 0.00 to 3.50 per dozen.
Minnie Fleetwood Floyd died at 7 20 AM at her Hall Road home near Thomasville after a long illness. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 4 PM at Fredonia Baptist Church with Reverends Swafford and Callaway officiating and burial in Fredonia cemetery beside her husband. Pallbearers include Oscar Nesmith James Smith Willie Golden Mardie Parker Leon Hancock Cecil Thompson. honorary pallbearers listed. She was born January 6 1881, a native of Thomas County, daughter of Arthur D and Ligeio Jackson Fleetwood. Survived by one sister Mrs J L Barwick and one nephew Frank Luke. brother Jack Fleetwood preceded her. Sincere sympathy from many friends. Whiddon’s Funeral Home handling arrangements.
Dr Byron Jones pastor of the First Pentecostal Holiness Church will speak Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Church of God on Macintyre Street during a monthly fellowship meeting joined by congregations of the Church of God Pentecostal Holiness and Assembly of God churches.
George C. Spence, representative of the U S Treasury Savings Bond Division for Georgia, spoke to Thomasville Rotary about industrial growth and the government fiscal system. He praised George M. Humphrey and explained savings bonds benefits for investors and future careers while noting the club’s warm reception and local guests.
Members of the Bainbridge Lions Club heard an address by Rowland Bolton on compulsory liability insurance and its legislative status. He outlined pros and cons, administrative challenges, and proposed company suggestions tied to highway safety. The luncheon at Stephen Decatur Hotel also included a Cub Scout re registration ceremony led by Dr. J P Waddell and club officers.
Thomasville and Thomas County need year-round employment for surplus male labor, said Bob Ausley at the Lions club. Ausley, realtor and president of the local Industrial Development Corporation, urged more investigation into businesses that fit local assets. New members joining included Jack Gibson, L. D. Foster, Theo Rumble, and Madison from New York Life and J C Penney’s.
Mrs John C Sons suffered burns to both legs from a possible gas water heater blast at her Albany Road home. She was listed in satisfactory condition at Archbold Memorial Hospital after fire damaged the living room dining room and kitchen while bedrooms remained intact. Fire Capt. C Dunlap said a yard man reported the heater blew up or flared near Mrs Sons as neighbors heard her scream and a bystander rescued her baby.
Pavo Consolidated School completes a March of Dimes drive raising 145.75 dollars, surpassing last year’s 104. Kiva groups exceed ten dollars with top contributor Fannie Cooper's seventh grade at 42.60, aided by balloon sales and other methods.
Roscoe Jackson Miles, 24, a junior in business administration at Jacksonville State Teachers College, was found dying on campus near the administration building. Police and college officials investigate a death they deem potentially accidental or unconnected to foul play. The incident follows a night when Miles purportedly traveled with classmates to Cedartown, Georgia.
