The Prohibition enforcement battalion of 165 men received final instructions from State Director Day to enforce strict liquor laws over the New Year holiday. Warnings were issued against drinking strange cold mixtures known as hootch. a dozen deaths have been attributed to such contraband since Christmas.
In Chicago an enlarged force from Prohibition Director Gregory and investigators from Attorney General Brundage prepared to seize illegal liquor as New Year’s Eve approached. Over five thousand officers to patrol the city and enforce the dry law.
Millions of German paper marks, valued at about half a cent each, have been offered in the United States to banks and individuals by Germans seeking to settle debts here. Local bankers refused to accept the depreciated currency, stating debts were contracted in gold marks and must be paid in money of equal value.

London December 81 The Esthenian ship Sarema was sunk without warning in the Gulf of Finland by the Russian Soviet ice breaker Vingt. Thirty eight persons drowned in the sinking, according to an Exchange Telegraph dispatch from Stockholm today.
Washington December 31 heads of delegations from the five major powers and the Netherlands reached an accord granting cable rights on the island of Yap to the Netherlands and Japan. The United States participated in the discussions and expressed agreement in principle.
New York City health officials say eighty or ninety leprosy cases exist locally. Health Commissioner Copeland presented a sample of what he called practically non contagious lepers at a physicians meeting, noting leprosy is more common than believed and not easily spread without open sores.
A plea to name the Indian republic the United States of India was presented as President Mohani opened the All India Muslim League session in Ahmenadad on December 31. The proposal seeks a January 1 declaration of the new republic.

Joe Bonner a Black man condemned for the murder of A. B. Jones was shot in the feet during an escape attempt while being moved from Bibb county jail toward Atlanta. Sheriff Middlebrooks of Jones county received severe bruises in a struggle in a coal bin behind a local hotel.
New York December 31. Business prospects for 1922 are generally hopeful according to statements by prominent bankers published today by the American Bankers Association. Thomas B. McAdams president of the association says the future of business and finance in the United States is encouraging and the time for anxiety seems past. John C. Lonsdale president of the National Bank of Commerce at St Louis adds recovery should begin by mid 1922.
Five trains are snowbound in the Farleigh mountains and there is a complete tie up between Springhill junction and Truro due to a snow storm in Nova Scotia. Rail workers say the situation is the worst in many winters.
Rome Italy Dec 31 The King signed a decree postponing the December settlement scheduled for today on all Italian bourses until January 4 at the request of the ministers of industry and treasury.
White House officials said the decision on leaving a small U S force with Allied occupation in Germany was not yet made. Any remaining troops would be few, with U S troops from the Rhine returning home at about 800 per transport. Germany has no payment yet. credits exist as an obligation the United States may collect later.

Birmingham, Alabama, December 81 f Four miners were killed and four more injured in an explosion at the Docena mine operated by the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company today.
Cherbourg December 31 The British battleship Vengeance with a small crew was adrift in the English Channel during a morning storm. It was being towed to a shipyard for dismantling when tow lines parted. Two French naval tugs sent to assist were repelled by the weather.
Coast guard at Elizabeth City N C reports the British schooner Messenger of Peace seized off the North Carolina coast with a cargo of liquor. Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Clifford was informed of the seizure today.
In New York on December 31 a million and a half dollar series of government bonds, marked paid, were reported stolen while en route from the Federal Reserve Bank to Washington. Abe Attell and the wife of Sam Gold, along with Harry Cohen, were named in the case as suspects following inspector findings.
