A 20 year old from Lubbock Texas named Nancy Bernard won the 1966 Maid of Cotton title in Memphis Tennessee aided by a lucky penny and a blue stuffed elephant. She succeeds Judy Hill of Fort Worth and greets autograph seekers after the announcement as her family celebrates. Martha Tate Stokley and Vivian Elizabeth Davis were first and second alternates with Patricia Patterson and Anna Frances Tipton among the final five.
New York reports FCC concern over loud commercials and color inconsistencies in TV. Steps include prescreening ads, potential sound reductions in control rooms, and an industry color instruction film by the Society of Motion Picture Technical Engineers to guide producers of color film and tape.
More than eight million income tax return forms are dropping into individual mail boxes across seven Southeastern states. The IRS reports six million 1040 long forms and 2.5 million 1040A short forms mailed. About 2,500 employees will work at the Southeastern Service Center in Chamblen as returns arrive from Georgia North and South Carolina Florida Tennessee Alabama and Mississippi.
The Grand Jury submits general and special presentments from the October 1965 term of Thomas Superior Court. They commend Judge George R. Lilly and Judge Robert Humphreys, thank local law enforcement, support a Juvenile Desenition Home, urge motor vehicle ad valorem tax collection with licenses, propose per diem pay raises, ask for funds in future budgets, and recommend reapportioning Thomas County Commissioners.
