W L Whittle outlines Georgia agriculture prospects for 1956 noting record 1955 yields and ample marketing supplies across major crops. Cotton, tobacco, peanuts, and broilers face quotas and price pressures, while hogs and beef cattle provide mixed income prospects amid expected production shifts and cost concerns.
Hollywood report notes Donald O Connor, 30, will pause film and TV work after completing Anything Goes. He plans one picture a year or every two years, aiming for a strong, serious production rather than revues, with Las Vegas Sahara as his next engagement.
The Air Force Aid Society thanked television personality Arthur Godfrey for a 100000 contribution. Society president Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker said the gift was the largest in the group’s history. Godfrey gave the money from his Saturday Evening Post articles. The society assists Air Force members and families in need. Soil erosion has forced U. S. farmers to abandon over 25 million acres of crop land. Average loss is 500000 acres a year.
The U S Department of Agriculture announced a 1956 price support plan to discount loans on pale and slick flue cured tobaccos. The action targets grading and loan levels, with price gaps about 20 percent below normal for affected tobacco. Flue cured tobacco is grown across Virginia North Carolina South Carolina Georgia Florida and Alabama.
Hazel Creasy 23 of Brooklet and Edward Johnson 21 of Savannah are named Georgia IFYE delegates for 1956. They join Hubert Yow of Dooly County for six months living and working with overseas farm families to foster world understanding.
H W Bennett reports the eleventh year of Georgia 4 H Club poultry chain with 21 counties winning only blue ribbons. Fulton and Emanuel Negro counties had all pens rated excellent, 453 blue ribbons 142 red 44 white total 72 percent blue 21 percent red seven percent white.
Today at the Youth Center an open house for junior high students. Saturday features a smorgasbord at Ellis home followed by a 9 p.m. dance. Also at 9 p.m. a Post 222 dance at the Post home. Monday includes a 2 p.m. open house at Legion Post 222 and an 8 p.m. Rebekah Lodge meeting at IOOF Hall.
County Agent W. L. Whittle urged a 1956 Safe Driving Year for tractors. He cited that tractor accidents made up about one fifth of farm-death total in 1953 and noted that one third of fatal tractor crashes involved under 20s. Four safety rules were highlighted to protect youths and guide training and supervision.
An alumni committee at the University of Georgia proposes consolidating six agricultural agencies to save tax money. The panel, led by Phil Campbell and Harfry Brown, suggests forming a College of Agriculture and related schools under a vice president or dean, but stops short of a firm recommendation.
